CDV Delete - Night and Day!
What a wonderful change! I've been driving three-pedal cars for 40 years and thought I was becoming an inept, drooling old fool. Why did I wait 18 months and 29,000 miles to take care of this?
I bought the modified CDV from Zeckhausen and had a BMW specialty shop do the installation.

The Clutch Delay Valve (CDV) restricts the flow of hydraulic fluid in the line that operates the clutch when you press the pedal. BMW added this to most or all of its manual transmission cars over the last five to ten years. As I understand it, the purpose is to protect the differential from abrupt power delivery such as dumping the clutch at 5,000 RPM for a drag racing start.
The problem is that the momentary delay makes it hard to feel exactly when the clutch disengages as you release the pedal. It's more of a problem at relaxed speeds / low revs when you're simply trying to drive smoothly. If you're driving more aggressively - say upshifting quickly at > 4,000 RPM - it's not noticeable. There are many CDV threads on this site and I'm sure most of the explanations are more accurate and thorough than mine - but I hope this is helpful. It's supposed to be a very easy DIY but you need to know how to bleed the air out of a hydraulic line to complete the job properly. Because the clutch and brakes share a fluid reservoir, the tech at my shop also checked all four brakes for air after he changed the CDV. You can simply remove the valve and reattach the lines on either end but that's a problem if you are still under warranty and don't want the dealer to know that you've modified the car. see http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...&highlight=CDV and http://store.zeckhausen.com/catalog/...dv-005&x=0&y=0

How much did you pay for the install and fluid bleeds?

$85 for an hour of labor
$12 for brake fluid $ 4 sales tax at Ace Performance Systems in Tewksbury also $26 + $8 shipping for the modified CDV from Zeckhausen $135 grand total I know it's a lot for a simple job but I'm not handy and I wanted to be sure that it was done right with a quality part.

++1 to the CDV delete!
I waited almost two months and... that was two months too long to wait! I should have done it the very first day! Well.. ok, the first week of ownership! The best way I can describe the difference with doing the CDV delete is... when you press down onto the clutch pedal, even though your foot is dead on the floor... the clutch release arm is still moving to fully disengage the clutch. There is a "lag" or "delay" as the clutch goes engages or releases fully. Ever drive a stick sometimes half asleep... trying to move the shifter, with your foot not fully pressing down on the clutch or not at all... then you start fumbing with the gear shift lever and it kind of balks and resists... that is what the CDV is doing. THEN you press fully down on the clucth pedal and all is GOOD - that is what the CDV-delete feels like! A car with the CDV delete will just plain shift smoother and faster and with LESS jerkyness than with a CDV in place. The shifter moves more fluid-like and the car doesn't buck and surge when shifting gears now. The shifter moves smoothly from gear slot to gear slot. Especially in the 1st/2nd gear throws. 3rd & 4th gear throws/engagemant feel really good now! Dackel Last edited by Dackelone; 01-06-2011 at 04:32 PM.. |

Bleeding the clutch wasn't that hard to do - you just need to have all the right tools on hand. Like Motive's euro pressure bleeder. http://store.motiveproducts.com/euro...-0100-p34.aspx Also have some good tight fitting flare wrenches helps. Dackel |

The clutch is nice....but the delay sucks. I did mine because it really felt like my clutch was slipping (to me) and when you are driving spiritedly you want that clutch to engage the moment you take the foot off.
Best thing i did.

Okay, had mine installed yesterday when I had the car in for the 1200 mile oil change...subtle but very noticeable improvement. Clutch is now much easier to modulate when starting off in 1st, making the whole process much smoother and less vague feeling. Similar improvement in smoothness on the 1-2 up-shirt.
The shop charged me $68 for install and system bleed. Part I think was $26 + shipping from Zekhausen(sp?) so it's about a $100 mod when all said and done. Well worth. |

OK, I just did my CDV. I wouldn't call it night and day. It's nicer, yes, but totally underwhelming.
My BMW independent charged $150 (overpriced) and I don't feel it was worth it. It does feel more like my CDV-less E36. I always thought the CDV was more intrusive on my old E46 compared to my 135. If you don't have problems shifting now, I would recommend against this mod. |

My 128i has the CDV, and I've been thinking about whether I want to remove it. But it doesn't really bother me. Especially if I make a mental note to adjust my driving for it. Basically, when I switch to my 128i from my other car, I need to remember to release the clutch faster. As in, immediately. That way, the CDV acts like my foot pausing on the engagement point and making ths shift smooth. If I remember this, I can shift smoothly. If I don't, and I pause my foot, the car is jerky when switching gears.

@Alow - even IF you are a smooth driver the CDV will make your clutch pedal feel more crisp when pressing it down or releasing it. Getting rid of the really makes the car feel more alive. When I step on the clutch pedal I want it to disengage NOW. Not in half a second. The CDV drove me mad. I am really glad I got rid of mine.

I've never felt that the gearbox or clutch were an issue, be interesting to drive a car with the CDV delete just to compare..

just did a cdv delete as well, been driving it for 3 weeks now after mod. I think i like the difference mainly cause its quicker engagement and more predictable now.. Im still adjusting to the difference when i shift so it seems slightly more jerky to me as of now but overall i think this mod is good. It should increase performance as far as acceleration as well. Was a super cheap mod for me.. Just got some Jack Daniel's whisky for my mechanic and dropped the car off. lol.. He called me back asking if i was sure i wanted to change the valve because it looked just like the one that was installed. I was assuring him the inside of the valve was different. Hes a good mechanic lookin out for me like that.
Also, i thought the shifting would be better and less notchy going into 3rd and 2nd. Its still notchy but not as much hesitation to sit in gear i think i noticed.. Its a good mod.

Now... for you guys who have done the CDV... you NEED the BMW Performance SSK. 55mm throws instead of 800mm throws! This will really make yourself wonder why BMW did not make the car with it!
As for the notchness... yea... mine is a little notchy still in 1st and 2nd gears. Even though I just changed my trans fluid... I am thinking about switching to Red Line's D4-AFT... bc it is known to make the trans shoft lighter/smoother. Atleast that is what I felt with my old e36 when I switched to it. Dackel |

I think if i didnt have the SSK i wouldnt feel this notchy hesitation going into gear at all. I dunno i guess that the tighter less travel SSK makes the notchiness more pronounced. But I am being picky. this car drives well .. Also, I just changed my trans fluid recently like 4k km ago, and i am thinking of doing redline as well. I heard it will make shifting smoother as well. Dackel... do me a favor and try it out for me first lol..
