Removed the nubz from the stock Brembos then painted the exposed part with A52 Space Grey to match the rest of the caliper. Together they weigh 3lbs & serve zero purpose IMO. All you need is a hex key to undo the screws. You can actually feel the reduced unsprung weight. My second time doing this to a pair of 135i brembo brakes. Will get better clean picture in the daylight when I can. Also charged car battery with Eufab via the engine bay terminals because I had it in the garage for weeks, started right up. Cant see where the date is but I suspect it's the original 2011.

Calipers do look slick without them.

Removed the nubbiez from the Brembos, heres better picture with some daylight. Happy with results, less weight, no apparent downsides

Finally got a 2011 coupe brochure. With my old lexus I got both a Lexus US brochure and a JDM Toyota Aristo brochure like days after picking up my GS. So I'm ashamed that it took so long to get a 1er brochure.
Since y'all are talking about the 6-pot brakes. I did notice a pic in the brochure that depicts the performance brakes with their little nubs removed.

I'm gonna follow suit on this. No other performance calipers have these so why would they be necessary. Likely just for aesthetics.

Other than that I see NO reason why. Maybe a heat sink but that seems silly.

My thought is maybe it was added for additional heatsinking or for some sort of harmonic dampening to prevent brake squeal / noise, but yeah, it's a lot of extra sprung weight per wheel with (apparently) very little downside for removal.

Good guess. If so, I don’t care about some squeal. I’m trying to shave every ounce and I’ve already gone two piece rotors so this would be a nice additional unsprung savings. With that and the forged wheels I’m saving 14lbs on each front corner.

I would like to add one more pic. I think they were arguing over this. Methinks the engineers at BMW had a similar discussion regarding future models, and they came to the conclusion that it did nothing or very little, given that I have not seen any other hooves/knubs on any other calipers.
Anyone ever see 300zx or R32 front calipers? Those had pronounced cooling fins on them but disappeared after the mid 90s from presumably better pad formulations and brake fluid did more for performance

Done. Don’t mind the rust, it’s been parked for over a year.

I replaced the plastic intake piece with the accordion that goes into the intake box. I noticed some tears so I ordered up a new one.

+1 for the resonance theory. the weight of these X2 masses and screws is ~= to the weight of the steel caliper bracket.
