Bad BMW!
Well after the DCT leak and the repair tying up the car up for several day, I was about to trade it in for a '17 M240i.
So I took one for a ride. The 335 HP engine has a surprising amount of punch. The ride was a little softer than my One which is OK, since I've always felt it rode a bit too hard. The handling was very good, so no complaints there. About the only thing I didn't like was the electric steering which was way too light, but I'd get used to get quickly. When I got back to the dealer, I took a walk around it. Dimensionally it is slightly bigger than the One, so it's still a small car. I then took a hard look at it which I had never done before. The car is Butt Ugly!. While the One has smooth flowing supple lines, the Two has a very blunt hard edged look. Well I can't buy an ugly car, so that killed any trade-in idea. I went back to my lovely little One and offered her a sincere apology. I promised that'd spend whatever sum of money necessary to keep her in top running order! |

Get a Dinan or other tune and you'll have more power and torque than the stock M240i. For me the looks are a wash. The 2 looks nicer in the front, the sides are almost identical and the 1 looks better from behind. I like the rear arches on the 1 better too. I think simply replacing the front bumper on the 1 with a 1M style one and maybe doing something with the headlamps fixes it's issues on the front.

I agree the one series is on balance a better looking car.
My dealership had a M245i ?... But it was with all the extra body work. ie. the front air dam was different then the normal 2 series. The M245i I saw was great looking but it was top of the line and so was the price and not the type of car you would use everyday.

My One has enough HP. I don't need Dinan, JB4, or other expensive rubbish to make my life more difficult. In fact, my Michelins at only 27K miles are nearly shot, so I know the engine is going a good job.
I agree that stupid looking screen does ruin the appearance of the dash. Unless you have navigation, it doesn't really serve any purpose. BTW, BMW wants $1,900 for navigation. I love my $100 Garmin! An M245i? Never heard of that one! |

Funny.
Just last night I was looking at an M2 (and the 235i/240i models too) on my Autotrader app, considering my next car (years away, but it's fun to reaserch new cars so I do it often). Then I realized, "hang on a sec... I don't even LIKE it." Part of me just assumed that I should look at and will like the next model of our cars, but sadly it just ain't so. I actually prefer the 3s better than the 2s. So now I'm going back and forth between a late model used Cayman and a Toyota Tacoma. Still years away, but those are the ones I keep looking at, LOL.

Those are getting tempting....I really need the back seat/ trunk utility though. The other one that tempts me is the Z06 vettes. But those have the same utility issues. The 1 really is an amazing package for what it is. Ride, handling, power, size and utility. I can actually carry my upright bass in it!!!

My take is the 1 is a better looking car then the 2. The 2's front is really good looking but the back and the way the side crease comes so high up on the car really looks bad. Overall the portions on the 1 looks much better IMO. I do not like the way the nav screen sticks up in the interior seems like an after thought. The worst part for me is the electric steering. It isn't even close to the steering of the 1. I also hate the fact that you need to put the car into sport mode or sport plus every time you get into the 2. With the 1 you get in and drive! Overall I felt like the 2 was disconnected to the driver and the road compared to the 1. Maybe I am old fashion but the 1 is much closer to what BMW use to be. That is why when my lease was up in March after a lot of test drives with the 2 I would get back into my 1 and say I am sorry that I thought it was a good idea to trade you in!!!! That's my two cents FWIW. :

Agree. I don't mind the front, but the rear is a deal breaker for me.

The One just wasn't a great sales success for BMW, and the Two was an effort to appeal to current buyers who are? Crazy Millennials whom I understand don't like cars and love every everybody? Well whatever, expect cars to become driverless appliance with electric motors being guided around by GPS or Elon Musk in his hidden lair deep underground in Nevada. |
