N55 walnut blasting
Within the past few months my car has been idling rough, got some hesitation on throttle application, revs will drop to 500ish bounce up to 1k, even died on me pulling out of the driveway last week. Hasn't died like that in years since before the software update.
Anyways, the car is a 2011 and has 48k, figured it was time for walnut blasting and new plugs. I had Dan from Lilly Automotive come over and this is what we found. Just a normal paper thin layer of carbon dust buildup. Nothing like that wet gunk you see when people usually post up their intake cleaning pics from N54s. So, we decided not to do it and just change the plugs. Unless my car is unusual it does seem there is some truth about the changes made to the N55 to help reduce the buildup. Possibly a redesign in the PCV system to help the intake burn hotter? If anyone in central FL needs a good mechanic that travels I would definitely recommend Lilly Automotive, you can find him on here.

Getting my car colonoscopy today. But, I have a N54 and it's been about 46K since the last nut blast. Plugs will be done also. Had some rough idle here and there. This should solve that.

Thanks J for posting this, good to see the N55 is not prone to the same carbon issues. you just save me some $$ ~150 for OCC + $500 walnut blast= almost enough for a proper FMIC

Yeah, what was the outcome? Rev bouncing to me seems like a control issue and not a valve deposit one.
Good to see that we may not need to be quite as concerned with the N55. Oil selection can play into this as well... |

There was a code stored that indicated lean bank 1. I've been told that could be a precursor to HPFP failure. Perhaps that has something to do with it. Overall I'm pretty happy. FYI I used OEM Bosch plugs, not the OE BMW ones.
