best intercooler for stock tune?
i'm sure someone somewhere has talked about this but i can't seem to find the right post, anyone have experience with getting a fmic without a tune? i'm just looking to keep the car breathing well at the track, not really looking for an intercooler to later boost on. also, anyone have any recommendations for super mild tunes? i was thinking of going cobb + ptf and asking for a mild tune but it looks like they aren't servicing n54's at the moment

whoa, never heard of mhd, is it the android phone tune that i'm seeing on google? thats a little nuts, i'm not familiar with how intercoolers quite work but from what i've been reading wouldn't a 7" intercooler be a little large if i wanted to run a stock tune/as close to stock as possible

Yes they use a app to to deliver the maps to flash on your car. Much more improved than Cobb. If your tracking the car, you want to be able to keep your iat as low as possible. I'm sure a 5" would work but the 7" is better and would help combat heat soak even more. Doesn't matter how stock your car is, heat soak is a problem that will rob power.

Another benefit of the MHD set-up is that the core software is free, then you purchase the bit you want- logging and flash tuning are separate modules. This means you can just get the logging for now and see your engines current status with stock intercooler. Then, when you install the new IC you'll be able to quantify the results. Later, when you're ready, you can get the tune package that you want, or custom tune if desired (or both) and again be able to log and track results.
Main point is, if you're tracking, having the ability to log your track sessions, along with the extra gauges for things like coolant temp, is invaluable.

if you're buying now for your end target then you'll need to deal with the compromises. It's just some lag as uou fill the extra volume, no big deal and probably not even really noticeable.
Pressure -vs- effeciency will be a wash...

Cool, so to speak (tee-hee), and all the more reason to have a good logging capability!

I have the 7" intercooler and have noticed no lag whatsoever. These cars are torque monsters and pull almost instantaneously.

Are you experiencing timing pull at the track? If not then there is no need to change it as your car is stock.
If you absolutely must do it then find one that is of the lightest weight which would normally be of a tube and fin design. |

Research FORGE. It's plug and play w/ no cutting involved, it also uses the OEM connections so install is easier.

I'm running the vrsf 7" non hd intercooler. Required some trimming but nothing that you will see once everything is buttoned up. If you don't want to trim anything, I've heard the 5" is a direct fit.

I was experiencing heat soak badly even after just one pull on the street with the stock so I could only imagine on the track it would probably really benefit.

Screenshot sample of extra gauges- just what I'm using at the moment while out cruising. If it can be logged it can be a gauge too...

On the track you have constant high airflow to the IC so there is much less chance of heat soak happening. The stock IC should be able to support the stock turbo (at least for a few hot laps ) if everything is stock. If the climate is very humid then you should never drive the car too hard anyway (especially on the track) as you can still burn out the turbo or drastically shorten its lifespan even if you have a bigger and more efficient IC. |
