Montego Blue European Delivery

Got back from Europe about a month ago...it's been a long time coming with the photos but I'm finally done. Below are some photos and the full album from the trip is at http://picasaweb.google.com/maxwellk/EuropeanDelivery.

We started in Munich, went east to Freiburg, to visit my friend who is an exchange student at the university there, then went down through eastern Switzerland and also hit up Austria and Italy. Then we got news that we could visit Chateau Miraval, the Chateau that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are renting out and going to buy for $70M, if we could make it down to the south of France by the next morning. We drove through the night, got a few hours of sleep, and visited the next day. Did wine tasting and also got a tour of the studio there that such albums as Pink Floyd's The Wall and Rammstein's Mutter were recorded. Got to listen to the albums in the same space they were originally recorded - simply amazing! Then we headed down to Cannes and Nice and spend two days there, each. On the last day, we took 3 hours before we had to turn the car in and drove the Col de Turini. Amazing road, wish that we had spent more time on it!

I carried a small GPS receiver with me which recorded the route. I've downloaded the trip files and wrote a little web app to see the route that we took. Check it out here - http://www.maxwellkruger.com/europeandelivery/. If you turn on high detail, you can actually zoom in and see to the foot exactly where we were at most stages of the trip. If it's running too slow for you, try to turn down the detail. Also, this means that most of the photos are geotagged so if you open them up in PicasaWeb, they will show a little map in the bottom right hand corner. You can open them all up in Google earth if you want - it's pretty cool!

Also have 7 hours of HD video to be edited so expect that in the upcoming future!

Fantastic pics and love the googlemaps trip blog!! Please give your impressions on a four adult road trip, and how the space was for you guys.

In Freiburg, did you guys take the funicular up the hill (by the cathedral - where you took the HDR pic - above)?

Thanks everyone for the positive comments.

Doing the trip with four people was not bad. It was a little tight, but definitely doable. The front seat passengers were fine, the back was a little tight. Having done 2 similar length trips in the US with just 2 people also this year, this was a little bit different. Took a little bit of time to get used to no space inside the car to keep anything, really; even keeping two extra SLRs, some lenses, and a laptop inside the car proved to be annoying, especially for the backseat passengers - anything more would have been impossible.

The biggest problem that we had was space for our luggage. It was quite a challenge to fit it all in the trunk and proved to be a tetris game every time someone wanted something from their suitcases. We traveled fairly light with all carry-on luggage (except for my friend who was staying an extra month in Ireland and brought his fiddle along).

ssabripo,
For HDR, you want to take 3 or 5 bracketed shots (or you can use a RAW file, though not as good) and load them into a piece of HDR software. I use Photomatix - it works a lot better for me than the built in Photoshop tool but there are tons of other software packages out there that process HDR images. I just use HDR as a tool to improve the range of the image, and then do most of the post-processing in Photoshop. A quick search on Google brings up tons of tutorials - here is one that I just found http://abduzeedo.com/how-create-hdr-...matix-tutorial.

Looks like a very similar route we'll be taking. I hope to come back with some great shots like that as well. I see you shoot with Nikon. I'm a Canon guy here!
