Hub dyno vs Rolling dyno - accuracy difference?

In my brief research into dynos I have seen reports that the hub is "more accurate" than the rolling dyno.

What experiences have you had?

I chose a hub dyno because its accuracy run to run is incredibily good. So good, that the operator swore he could tell me the power diff between headlights on/off.

Dynapack are the only ones I know in Australia that offer hub dynos. They are extremely accurate and expensive, but more important is the facility they are installed in and the dyno operator.

The facility I used cost the operator a $1m aud to setup. It really was a work of art.

I'm not sure how accurate dyno dynamic rollers are but if they are calibrated and run properly they are more than up to the task of what you need.

Good luck!

Thanks mate. I've been quoted about $180 (and 2 hours)for a run on a hub dyno vs $80 (and 15 mins) on a rolling dyno. Is the difference in accuracy that significant?

amk2912, that seems expensive to me. I paid about $140 which was about 4 runs.

It does not take 2 hrs to setup a hub dyno. They just jack the car up from the rear, remove the wheels, install some sensors and the hubs and away you go.

Well, I've been told and witnessed the dynapack dyno in person and I was very impressed. The facility, operator and the dyno itself was far superior to the roller dyno I used at another tuner.

I'll contuine to use the same dyno/operator for all my mods. I feel its worth it if you get alot of diag data from your tuner.

my evo, on rolling dyno= 207kw on hub dyno= 244kw

but every dyno has different reading no matter hub or rolling. (eg: same tune, SJ dyno= 227kw Chiptorque=195kw)

The dyno that Kris used looked mighty impressive. I would not hesitate to use something like that!

High horsepower hub dynos are always better cause you wont get any wheel spin issues as you do on the rollers but your looking at big horsepower though.

If you like impressing your mates with HP numbers go the Hub dyno as it always gives higher numbers lol.
