128 to 135 front bumper (w/ euro fogs).

The title says it all, here is a quick write up. All was ordered from Dan at United who ways very up front about the fact that, unlike the rear bumper kit, this is not an approved BMW kit, rather an assortment of pieces. I crossed my fingers and went to work.

Starting at the top, lift up the rubber seals trip across the top of the grill and remove the 4 hex screws. There are 3 fasteners inside the wheel wells, just crank your wheel over and you can get in there no problem. Undo all fasteners across the botton edge of the bumper under the car. At this point the bumper should come off but hangs up at the leading edge near the headlight assembly. Slide something underneath to push down the small locking tabs and it will come out. The closeup of the bumper corner shows all mounting points and locking tabs. Grills easily transfer to the new bumper.

The fog light assemblies bolt to the backside of the bumper and the lights snap in place with the addition of the mounting screws. The bulbs simply twist out of the old 128 lights and twist into the new fogs - simple! A quick light test before the whole bumper snaps back in. I show a pic with the assemblies and lights in place.

Reassembly is easy but I ran into a problem at the bottom of the car. The center 3 mounting holes under the bumper no longer line up with anything on the car. The new bumper must be a slightly different shape. Also I was not able to figure out how to mount the 2 pressure seals shown in the pic. Perhaps the 2 things are related. I would appreciate any help if you know the answer.

Overall I am very pleased. The front bumper design of the 128 leaves something to be desired and this fixes it nicely.

Not cheap. Bumper is $580 including foglights, painting is $300, plus shipping around $150-200. The wheels I got from the for sale forum on this site. Should be able to get a set for around $750.

I was wondering about the euro foglamps- is this something us 135i guys can retrofit and what would it take- I'd get the oem front/rear fog lcm from Andy at leatherz for $60 but then I'd need the fog kit and the wiring- Dan maybe you can chime in here?

Wow, what a difference. Looks great. Do you have any more pics of your whole car with the rear and front done? Would like to do the same to my 128. Already have the 135 wheels.

Don't think so. The fogs would block the oil cooler that you 135 guys have.

Weather permitting I will wash it tomorrow and take some pics. Of course, now it just looks like a 135.

NO, it has the euro mesh and fogs and no pop-outs for headlight washers, the headlight washers are definitely cool, but the caps look tacky, looks awesome, great job!

Looks great Ulrich! I'm glad that you're pleased with it! The two trim pieces are the lips for under each side of the fender liner. They are specifically for the M bumper (135i front bumper).

I highly recommend against adding fog lights to 135i's although I don't see why it can't be done. I would be worried about the oil cooler. You would also need to get a new LCM (unless you've gotten the one from Andy) to enable the fogs. I can't even guarantee that it would work

Thank you so much for this DIY, i just bought an AW 135i bumper off of Cooldaddygrove because he swtiched his front bumper to a performance bumper.. it will arrive in a few days, i was just wondering if you used the same hardware that came off of your 128 bumper?

Everything transfers but you will need 4 addtl. fasteners. The total number needed to attach the fog light carriers and fog lights is (10). There are only (6) you can transfer from the 128 lights. PM me if you get into trouble.

BTW,
Dan at United can get you the euro foglights and hardware seperately if you want them.

Thank you for the DIY ulrichd.

Does anyone know if something like this can be done with the performance bumper? Dan?

Absolutely. If anything, it will be easier because you won't have to worry about mounting the fog lights. Not sure If you get a warning light on the dash if you just disconnect them. I went this route because I prefer the look of the 135 bumper and wanted to keep the foglights.

Here's a pic after washing today. Too bad you can't see the Coral Red interior.
If anyone is interested, the total budget for front and rear bumpers, side skirts (used) and wheels (used), including paint was $2,500. The money for my original sport package wheels and tires paid for the new 18" non-runflats Yoko S-drives and shipping of all pieces..

I originally paid just over $32K (sport, 6-speed, xenons, coral leather) for the car so I am at $34.5K. I think the car represents a great value at this price point. Only other car considered was a JCW Mini (I came from a 2003 Cooper S) but it would have been more than this.

Love that pic Ulrich, mind if I use it?

As for fog lights on the Performance Aero bumper... at this time there is no kit that is offered nor one that can be retrofitted. The M Sport fog lights used for Ulrich's bumper were designed specifically for the European model Aerodynamic bumpers (notice the air-duct cut outs are the same as the 135i) so it's not possible to use the M grids to place fog lights.

Very nice, I really like the way the 135i bumper looks with fogs!
