Post BMW considering five 1-series variants for next generation

Saw this on autoblog but a lot of this a lot of ppl here already know or speculated.

A report by AutoBild states that BMW's designers are hard at work on the next iteration of the 1 series and that five different body styles are under review, with only one headed for production.

The variations include a three-door shooting brake, a five-door wagon, a "Progressive Activity Sedan" smaller than the X1, a lifted "Sports Activity Coupe" with a glass roof and, coinciding with an earlier report, a more traditional "sports tourer" that could be the spiritual successor to the 2002.

According to AutoBild, no matter which model makes the cut, BMW plans to downsize the displacement of its engines and begin the wide-scale implementation of turbocharging and direct injection across the 1 series range. The 116i model will make use of a 136 hp, 1.3-liter turbo, the 118i will use a 1.3-liter turbo tweaked to produce 177 hp, the 120i will get a 218 hp 2.0-liter turbo and the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six will put out an estimated 326 hp. Both new diesel engines and mild hybrid variants are also planned, and BMW's dual-clutch gearbox will be available on more sport-oriented models, while a standard slushbox will be employed on the rest of the range.

The new 1 series is expected to hit Europe in 2011, with a the Super Sport model debuting in 2012 and a convertible variant arriving a year later.

I hope they bring that hatchback to the US finally. That type of car is my true love.

They really need to NOT use the term "Super Sport". That's a Chevrolet package. That's like...slapping an ///M badge on a Camaro.

Depending on how the vehicles look and come together, an X1 diesel might be a great vehicle for me in a couple of years. Or a "Progressive Activity Sedan" - whatever the heck that turns out to be.

+1 BMW needs to come up with a more original name.

BMW contact Ikea so they can give the new 1 series an original name

the all new 1 series Ätorpek edition or something like that...

i don't see most of these models making it to the US. all i would like to see is an M version of the 135i (not dubbed the SuperSport). i wouldn't be opposed to additional models, as long as BMW doesn't do to the 1 series what Subaru did to the STi; make it a hatchback-only car.

We need a 3.0 atmo with 8000 rpm and 300hp min on tab an a car weigh about 1250kg in a 3 doors hatchback.

Those 1.3 turbo are nice for my grandma to get the grocery s.

It doesn't really make sense that they claim only one will make production. Clearly something has been lost in translation somewhere. There are already four 1 series styles and the number will almost surely increase next generation, not shrink. The current 3 door is basically a shooting brake already, the 5 door is a wagon (if not in name then in function) and of course there is the coupe and convertible. I would look for a sedan to be added to that next time so that the 3 series is free to continue its ascention among the BMW ranks without leaving a gaping hole - no entry level sedan - in the lineup.

There will probably be a SAC and PAS too but those will not be 1 series, rather X and V (or whaver they plan to call the PAS lineup). No different than the Z1 in that regard, i.e. based on 1 series, but not part of the 1 series.

This is what I want, but with 5 doors. And a better appearance than the current 5-door sold in Europe.

I wanted the next 1 to be lighter, firmer suspension, more hp and cheaper too. I don't care about any electronic gadgets or iDrive things like that. BMW needed to produce a back to basic performance car and stick to the "less is more" concept. No leather, no power seats, no power roof, no iDrive ... etc.

I would like to see a lighter 1 versus a more powerful 1. The N54 is fine, just put it in a 1 that is 3200lbs.

I tried that with my Elise. It wears thin after a while.

I hope you meant less than 3200lbs. I'd like sub 3000 if possible. Is 2800 too much to ask with all the current safety features?

-2800 lbs.
-wider fenders
-meatier wheels/tires
-cloth seats
-No runflats
-Performance suspension stock
-Performance exhaust stock
-Blonde inthe passenger seat (kidding)

I'll take a sequential-turbo 4-cyl diesel with a manual transmission please. I don't care what body style.

I was just trying to be realistic. To move it from 3373 to 3200 with all that safety stuff is still pretty good. I would love it if it was less than 3000lbs.

Hmmm, if they will only have 1 body type which would it be? First, that's a very questionable assumption, but if it's somehow true you can be assured that a large number of men with ties will do some serious number crunching to calculate the type which will align best with their overall strategy and make the most money. From my uninformed vantage point, I would not be surprised if the coupes get replaced with a 3 door hatch. The reason is that one of the core strategies is probably to protect/support/revive the 3 series. That's the big money maker. I would not be surprised if BMW suspects that the 135i has been canabalizing 3 coupe sales. A 4 or 5-door 1 of any kind would threaten 3 sedan sales. That leaves the 3-door hatch which could be guessed to appeal to different buyers than either the 3 coupe or sedan. The only BMW it might compare to would be the Mini and I bet their analysis again would show very different buyers. So long as it has a 300+hp option, I could live with it.

An Elise is beyond extreme in this regard. I thought I'd want a raw car--until I drove an Elise. Afterwards my Mazda Protege5 felt as cushy as a Lincoln Navigator.

My request is the 5-door with 23d. It has been that since my love of the 135.
