Got a speeding tocket at 78mph!
As the title says, what do you guys think? I was planning to contest this since I was trying to change to slower lane when I guess the cop clocked me in. I personally think that this speed is a normal freeway speed in the real world.

What's the speed limit? If they clocked you doing more than the posted speed limit, not sure how you can protest it?
Overtaking is not an excuse as far as I know. |

"I swear your honor! I wasn't going that fast, officer johnson is just a dick!" is that what you"ll say in court? thats like getting busted with drugs and saying well I only have a little bit....just saying. Shit happens I got written up for excessive acceleration to the speed limit. Sometimes cops just need to find a way to give you a ticket. Nothing personal, I am just saying these things happen to everyone. (Especially in a 1er)

78mph is the flow of traffic where I come from, where the speed limit is 70mph. If you're doing 70mph, semi-trucks are passing you.

I got a ticket for doing 53 in a 40 when the 55 sign was like 100 ft away. Cops are dicks sometimes...

I recommend the following; 1) escort passport 9500xi 2) stealth Veil coating for your license plate and headlights - this will delay the feedback back to the cop by 15-30 seconds when pinged by a laser gun allowing enough time to slow down. I confirmed it works by speeding through the State of OH on my way to Cleveland without a ticket and was pinged at least 8x on the hwy.
FYI...cops are dicks period...I have two in the family

I do understand that the speed limit is 65mph. But if the flow of traffic is around 75mph and I'm trying to change lane, shouldn't I tap the gas a little bit to match the speed of the lane I'm going to? I'm in the middle of the pack of around 10-15 cars that time BTW. Do you guys think I have a case here?

Your only hope of getting out of this ticket is to contest it and hope that the cop doesn't show up. Also, I hope you didn't make yourself 'memorable' to that cop by arguing and yelling at him, cuz if you did, then he'll definitely show in court.

I think so. Because when I was trying to find my most recent registration and proof of insurance, he told me that even the outdated ones will do. I know that cops might have a way of checking it but why not insist for the most recent or up to date?

Boxtyp3, yes, the cops are pigs. But having gone through that in the Bay Area, a couple suggestions. Depending on which court you are going, the courts schedule all the cases for a given officer together, so that the chance he does not show up is minimal. If he shows up, you are toasted, as the judge will blindly believe what the pig will say. So if I were you, have your day in court scheduled, then call in at the last minute requesting a schedule change (make up an excuse). This is your only hope. |

Sorry that you got a ticket - that sucks.
I don't know about the bay area - but I would go to court. In Virginia, it mostly depends on the judge, if the police officer shows up, and if you can talk to the prosecuting attorney before-hand. You can sometimes get a reduced fine by just showing up and pleading guilty - no explanation - just I'm guilty, and I'm sorry I did it. This is especially true if it's a first offense. If it is, by all means go to court and plead something, guilty or innocent. Sometimes you can get the ticket removed if you ask the judge if you can attend a traffic school instead of the fine/points. When you go to court, see if you can talk to the prosecuting attorney first and maybe 'make a deal' before-hand. As 'germ' pointed out, you can also ask for an extension - say you have something for work that day or whatever. By doing that you increase the chance that the officer will not show. Here, you need to request that in person - you can't call and say you can't make it - you have to go there in person to request it. Everywhere is different - gotta do something to make it interesting I guess! Good luck! -Joe |

Here are two links; 1) radar roy's website. 2) veil coating link within radar roy's website. It works great and does not cost a lot.

Contest the ticket...you'll be asked to come to the courthouse and talk with a prosecutor, where you can make your case and then likely get a deal to lower the fine, but it will still show on your record. Other option is to take defensive driving, but you'll have to pay a court fee plus the cost of the DD course (online/DVD is cheapest), but it won't appear on your driving record. Speeding tickets on your record will increase your insurance premium, so taking DD would be your best choice. If you've taken DD for a speeding ticket in the past 12 months, you won't be able to do it for this ticket, though (that's how it is in TX, not sure about your state). In that case, ask for deferred adjudication, and if you don't get another ticket for 6 months or whatever the period is, you'll be good to go with nothing on your record.

When you drive fast (even with the flow of traffic), it is just a matter of time until you get a ticket. If you were in Michigan, be glad he didn't catch you when you were probably going faster (also with the flow of traffic). Show up to court, promise to slow down, and ask to have it reduced to 'impeding traffic' ($, but no points). I have had 2 reduced that way. Good luck:-)
