Arrow Video: My BMW 1M Coupe Stolen in 3 Min as Part of Recent UK BMW Theft Spree Using OBD

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My BMW 1M stolen without keys in 3 minutes! This is a video of a £43,000 BMW 1M Stolen at 3am in 3 minutes. The thieves accomplished this by accessing the BMW OBD port in the footwell by breaking the glass, reaching in and using a device to reprogram a blank key fob. The car was simply then unlocked and pushed off the drive and driven away.

BMW doesn't seem to want to admit they have a problem, even though over 300 cars have been stolen in March 2012 in a single UK county.

Additional info by Dackelone:

+1 on posting this video. It is hard to watch. I even asked my local dealer about this... they were shocked to hear how easy it is to steal a modern day BMW.

Here is how they clone the key fob. These guys in Bulgaria sell this reader for 8K euros. I am sure there must be some cheaper Chinees (copied) scan tools out there!

and two other interesting videos...

That would make me sick watching that if it was my car, as it must really piss you off watching that going on to yours.........I have never relied on any car alarm to be honest and no matter where I am, even parked up in my garage I always fit the disklok and I place the handle against the part of the window they appear to break to slide their arm through to gain access to the obd port, I found I had to move to get my arm down when giving it a go which the motion sensor picked up the other side of the disklok moving and the alarm triggered.......

Sorry mate about your loss.

However creepy, I commend you for releasing this, amidst your anguish. Hopefully BMW is finally shamed enough to deliver a solution.

In Italy almost everyone has some huge metal gate that they close at night(in their driveway/parking area). Even most hotels have those gates - bc there is a lot of theft. Even more in Southern Italy. Over here in Germany... IF you live close to Czech or Poland your chances are MUCH higher that your German made car will be stolen. The best thing is to make it as hard as possible for them to physically take the car. Gates, chains, steering wheel lock - what ever works for you. That said... IF they "want" your car... it is theres! Sorry for your loss OP.

Seeing one too many reports and threads like this.

The 1M Community needs to do something about this. Are there any proven solutions to disconnect the OBD connector?

We need to figure out how to move the OBDII port next to a motion sensor. I don't understand why BMW can't disable certain operations while the alarm code has been enabled in their networked systems??

Business Idea: Someone can make a lot of money if they can somehow manufacture custom steel OBD covers with a locking mechanism.

or if we can somehow increase the range of the alarm to cover that silly blind spot.

Hmm.... seems you can disable the port with just the pull of a fuse or even disconnecting the wires.

I would be paying people off to find out who took your car. OP, I'm sure a friend or acquaintance of yours has a contact in the underworld... use it wisely.

Would connecting the OBD port to only have accessory power, do the trick?

That way I believe you can only program a 2nd key (ie 1 original key needs to be in the key lock). In the hypothetical case you loose both your keys: only dealer can help you after proof of ownership.

Would any of you see any restriction on accessory powered OBD port?
