+1 The silky smooth I6 has proven itself. Let's see how the new four banger holds up.

You do realize that BMW knows a thing or two about four cylinder motors, no? Take a look at their headquarters, they're modeled after a four cylinder, not six, not eight, or even ten or twelve, but four. I have two straight sixes but wouldn't hesitate to buy a four from BMW.

I don't know why everyone thinks the inline 6 is the essence of a BMW. Yes they've built many amazing I6's but many more 4cyl before that. BMW using a I4 is NOTHING new if anything its more going back to roots than leaving them.

I do miss the low end torque of my GTI's 2.0T sometimes, but you can't beat the natural smoothness of a I6, no matter how many or how big the counterbalancers you put on.
I'm sure the I4T will be a great motor, but I'm a mechanical romantic, I guess.

After building many I6 engines from the 1930's onward, IIRC the first BMW fours came into being for the "New Class" cars some 20 years later. The issue I have is that after BMW folds it's tent, there will be no more NA inline 6 cylinder automobile engines available for those of us who prefer that configuration. Tom |

BMW is definitely known for the Inline 6 as much as Porsche is for the Flat 6. They each have made other very good engines in 4, 8, 10, and 12 cylinders. When I think BMW, I think I-6. The I-6 and F-6 are the most inherently balanced engines imo. They sound unique also. I hope BMW has at least one I-6 normally aspirated engine in its lineup. What is Porsche going to have to do, make everything a turbo as well? That would be cool, everyone with a 911 will have a turbo.

BMW is an engine manufacturer, first and foremost. It's their history; it's what they do. Why do you think there's a propeller on the front of your car? Let's wait and see how it goes -- the new 4s may be their best engines ever. You never know.

What I find a little ironic is that my turbo six gets worse mileage than my n/a six, has much worse throttle response and still runs out of steam at about the same range, all with only a little more torque and a constant stream of dead HPFP's. Not a huge fan. As an aside, you mention the "New Class" which was also the first BMW with a Hoffmeister Kink. That's worked out okay for them, maybe the four can stay too? |
