Jack stand / jack pad question
My Performance Exhaust was delivered today by Santa Brown, so time to figure out how to get the car in the air.
I've read as many threads as I can on getting the car up off all four, and think I've devised a system, and have just one more question: ....do you need a jack pad that fits the plastic thingy on the car for each jackstand, or is the jack pad just needed when jacking it up. I'll probably make inserts out of hardwood and wondering how many I need. Logic tells me I need one for each stand, but can't find any pictures showing that. My overall plan is pulling the front end up on my rhino ramps, sliding my jack under the front middle jacking point, pulling out the ramps and setting the front on the jack stands. Then I'll jack up the back on the differential and insert the rhino ramps on the back. Does this sound safe / reasonable for doing the exhaust install? tia, mg

Makes sense.
I made 4 blocks of wood that fit into the adapters on the bottom of the car, 1 for each corner. So I do what you said: get front up from middle front jacking point, then set two stands for the front, each with a wooden block fitting the adapter. Then I raise the rear from the diff and set two more stands for the rear with the remaining 2 wooden blocks. That's what I do when I need all corners up; and it is also how I store the car over the winter. |

Just re-read your post. All four corners on stands with wood blocks to fit the adapters on the car is preferred. Rhino ramps 2nd best IMHO. I'd leave them in the front and put your stands in the rear. Why remove ramps and move to rear? The rear has more clearance to get your jack all the way to the diff.

Perf Exhaust is axle back, right? If so, just need to back car on to a set of ramps and you're set. No need to get front end up. For safety (stories on net about rhino ramps breaking), I would put a set of jack stands near the rear jack points, just in case.

No, the PE cuts into the mid-pipes so the whole car has to be up. Haven't heard that about Rhino Ramps breaking and will look into another set of jack stands. Need to get out today to a sporting goods store to get some hockey pucks and hope to get this done over the weekend.

Got an axleback exhaust from forum member also.
I've been under the car and know what to do: just wondering.. What kind of lubricant are you guys using to remove the exhaust from the rubber hangers? WD-40 or some kind of grease? I can't get out there this weekend due to being on call for my job, but as soon as I can I'd like to get this puppy installed. |

Step 1 on my PE install done. Bought some pucks at Big 5 and took 5 minutes with a hacksaw and vise to get them down to perfect size. They fit the car perfectly, and lay perfectly flat in my jackstand as well.
So tomorrow, with any luck and some extra time, will attempt to install the PE. if anyone is curious, I measured the pad on the car at 58mm x 32mm without getting too exact.

I'd avoid any petroleum products on rubber pieces. Some petroleum products can degrade rubber. Instead, dish soap can be used to lubricate the hanger mounts. that's what I used to install Berks axle back. An adjustable pliers will make removing original exhaust from rubber hangers easier.

Rubber can be formulated to withstand oil and fuel, but that is more expensive rubber, and not typically used where it doesn't need that kind of chemical resistance. |

I listed the size of the hockey pocks I cut for the jackstands in my PE install thread, but just measure the inside size of the jack support under the car and you'll get a perfect fit.
