N54 warranty extension to cover wastegate issues
Anyone seen this on the main page?
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=729833 The SIB only refers only upto MY 2010 E60, E61 (MY 2008, 2009, 2010): 535i including xDrive E71 (MY 2008, 2009, 2010): X6 xDrive35i E82, E88 (MY 2008, 2009, 2010): 135i E89 (MY 2009, 2010): E89 – Z4 sDrive35i E90, E92, E93 (MY 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010): 335i including xDrive I'm trying to understand if this would cover our 2011 1M's . I'm particularly concerned because I just had one of my turbos replaced due to the wastegate not closing fully. Not trying to create multiple posts but I thought this is something the US 1M owners would be interested in.

I downloaded that SIB after seeing it posted here a couple weeks ago: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=723104
Is it possible the 2011 1M is not listed due to an oversight, forgetting that 1M is a MY 2011 and has a N54 engine? EDIT: Or maybe because the 1M/335is numbers are so low, from the e90post: "Also, you are probably screwed on the 335iS even though it has a N54, but it was not listed as a qualified vehicle." In the thread reference above a few folks called BMW NA to confirm their car was covered. If I had a 1M I would do that. Last edited by jkoral; 08-15-2012 at 01:17 PM.. |

I agree with jkoral, the 335is and 1M's N54 should be covered. There is no difference in our turbos compared to any other N54.
I asked the same question here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=726310 Who do we have to call to get them to add coverage for us?

as per your request... I agree with the thought in that 1M's and 335is etc will also be covered.. Looking from the outside, one would guess that if the car is not listed, then it is not covered... BMW prints / releases those bulletins as a Guide.. There is another document which all dealers MUST review before doing any of this work and that is the DCS history report.. On that report there will be a "comments" box... in that comment box will be the notation for any dealer to see that the "extended warranty" applies.. this is similar to the notation for all the HPFP's that have there warranty extended also.. The DCS report is Vin specific so one would have to supply the vin to the dealer and have him run the report so that it can be read... as said previous it appears to be an oversite wont be the first or last time.. p.s. There are 2 versions of the N54 turbo.. one with Intergral wastegates, and one without.. the ones with, are used for replacement and later production OEM installs. I do not recall when the switch went into effect. Regards

Someone told me that too, but in http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...2&postcount=58, user "cvc 22349a" says Fall 2007 the arms went from 6mm to 8mm, which would mean all US 135i/1M have the revised WG.
It's also confirmed at this German site: http://bmw-wiki.meyer-gruhl.de/Softw...N54_%28x35i%29 The page above has some interesting info, especially with regard to the lag software and wastegate rattles, for example: ------- Q: Which type of wastegates have I got? My car falls into the period 09/07 to January, 17th, 2008? A: Have your dealer look at them. He has to measure the thickness of the rods in order to find out (old ones are 6mm diameter, new ones 8mm). There is no VIN-based database on that. However, if your wastegates don't rattle, you are not entitled to a preventive hardware replacement anyway - and since May 2009, you aren't even if they do. Q: I own a 135i and feel lag. Is my car elegible for the wastegate retrofit? A: Almost surely not. 99.9% of 135i were build after 05/08 and have MSD81, so they are "Case 1". ------- Regardless it doesn't appear the revised WG has solved the problem. |

I don't think so. 1seriesstud fell victim to the waste gate rattle. And a couple of others it looks like.
Had it repaired under warranty, but didn't like the fact that the car was suffering from issues from 2007/2008 that were supposed to be addressed by BMW. He ended up selling it because he didn't want to deal with anymore retro issues or new ones for that matter. I guess the question is will it be covered under the warranty extension... |
