That's weird that there is no insulation under the hood. I heard that was for fire suppression and safety

Been reading a lot about people switching from RFTs to non-RFTs... Thing is, once you get a flat with the non-RFTs, you're screwed, huh?
OK, you could carry a spare in your trunk, but you'd lose just about all your cargo space... And you can't use a mobility kit since the sealant would probably mess up your TPMS sensors... Doesn't leave you with very many alternatives...

Ordered one for E82 & E93 should be here next week and hopefully can reduce the engine noise.

Is the engine noise that noticeable/bothersome from the inside or are you talking about outside the car?

Engine noise was not that bad but might help to protect the paint on the engine hood.

That said, I do prop up my hood when I get home, to let all the heat out of the engine bay. Sounds like a good idea... I have AAA now, but I'm going to let it lapse since BMW will cover my car for the next four years.

[QUOTE=bmw1racer;12530258]I thought about that, but I'm not sure if it would protect the paint or even if the paint needs protecting.....?

That is a nice car congrats and it is the exact same ext/int color I want. Did you get the leather or leatherette and if you got leatherette how does it feel/smell can you tell the difference too much?
thanks, |

I got the leatherette 'cause it's lower maintenance than the leather and I didn't want to pay any more than I had to... Actually, I would've preferred cloth seats if they were available... I've only had leather seats once (E30 325is) and I didn't notice any difference between the two in smell or feel... I think it's more psychological, if anything.

I do, but only when I get home and don't plan to go anywhere else... It'll probably cause a premature failure of the hood release.

I think I just myth-busted the run flat tire: Sure you can drive on it, but if it needs to be replaced and they're not readily available/in stock, YOU STILL NEED A SPARE TIRE.
So now I'm effing stuck at home until a new tire can be delivered...

If it is a puncture such as a nail, etc. (as long as it is not on the sidewall) I believe it can be repaired just like any other tire? You remove the tire from the wheel and put a patch on the inside, re-mount and re-balance. Cost about 50 bucks at any good flat tire repair center.

That's pretty much what happened: When the tire shop pulled the tire off, they noticed that there were tears in the sidewall on the inside of the tire...
They didn't have a replacement and I didn't have a spare, so I just asked them to put the tire back on, re-inflate it, and I slowly limped home. I ordered a new tire from TireRack, but it won't arrive until Wednesday, so I'm stuck at home... I guess that'll give me time to contemplate my options: Spare tire or mobility kit....?

I had a temp spare for my Miata as Miat's don't come with spare tires or run flats either. They equip the cars with an air compressor and tire goop. The issue is with the goop, once in the tire it ruins it and it must be replaced. So, I bought a temp spare and kept it at home and threw it in the trunk when I went on a long trip. The spare would consume almost all of the trunk though. Around town I would not use it- if I ever got a flat I could call AAA or my wife, who works from home- to fetch the spare so I was all set.
Keeping a portable air compressor sounds like a smart thing to keep in the 1- if you ever get a flat from a slow leak from a nail puncture, etc. I would have not realized that if you drove on a run flat it would ruin the tire. Kind of defeats the purpose of a run flat does'nt it? In that case it might be a good option to keep a temp spare for this car too. Replacing a tire from a common nail puncture is not cheap. |

Got my replacement tire from TireRack today... Less than 48 hours from the time I ordered it... Awesome.
Now I just need to get it mounted and put this fiasco behind me. I did email my BMW rep to see if I could possibly recoup the cost of buying a new tire... *fingers crossed*
