How much oil does your engine eat?
i'm curious how often do you add oil because it seems to me that here are some post that the engine doesn't eat any oil...
as fof me - i used 0-30 and 5-30 castrol ll-01 and both of them fade 1 litre per 2000 km. the car is used agressivly and frequently on tracks.. is this normal? |

Depending on your driving style, I think it is normal for this car/engine. Mine needed 1 l. after only 3500 kms. and this despite first oil change around 1700 kms. (which I needed to do twice due to wrong oil from dealer).
If I would be using the car optimally (longer commutes rather than my daily short work-home routine) I guess could need less oil, I'll see how this will continue in the future when my routine changes. I followed everything I know about break-in procedures carefully and am pretty sure it is not the break-in.

Our car's eat lots of oil and coolant. It is just the way it is.
The harder you drive it... the more (fluids) you will go thru.

I think its partly bc once past the break in period "we" tend to drive the car hard. I think also once my engine got past 15K miles it used less oil. But I do notice IF I drive really fast/hard on the Autobahn... the engine will use some oil. Its just one of those things about German engineering I guess. I know other car makes use little to no oil. But most German makes seem to use oil. Btw... I think BMW says that any of their engines can use up to 1 liter of oil per 1,000 kms. When the engine starts to use more oil than that... THEN they will look into why the engine is using so much oil. Up to that limit, they(the German car makers) consider that normal engine oil consumption. I always change my oil every 4K miles and rarely do I have to add oil between changes. I do not believe in BMW's long OCI's and lifetime fluids. I think it is wiser to change one's fluids often, especially for thos of us who plan on keeping our cars long term.

Does not matter how any of you break in your engine. Every single one of your motors were built "with-in" a certain degree of acceptable tolerances and not one motor is the same. The whole idea is old school train of thought. Turn the key, drive the car how you are going to drive it everyday. They will all have different issues at different times and consume fluids at different times. Monitor, maintain, drive. Unless something is WAY off, I don't worry about a little oil burnoff...

Although i have a 135 (N54), I change my oil every 5,000kms (3,100 miles) and roughly measure the old oil using the measurments on the drop pan and its always approx between 6.25-6.5L that comes out. I dont believe the oil level sensor is completely accurate (as mine always shows full on the screen). That being said because the oil is quite fresh I doubt the engine will break it down and burn it in huge quantities. My 2 cents

I had my break in oil changed at 1200 miles and just had my one year oil change today with just over 8000 miles. Anyway, the "add 1 qt. warning" came on at about 7500 miles so it ate a qt in just over 6000 miles.

The cooling system is a closed system, there shouldn't be any coolant losses, huh?

Coolant is used to cool the HOT turbos when you turn off the engine. You will go thru coolant. We all have. Check your coolant when the engine is stone cold... you will see... your is probably low too.

There shouldn't be any coolant consumption, IMO..... I've had turbocharged cars before and that shouldn't matter, unless you have a leak somewhere. If coolant is being burnt, then you have a head gasket failure....

Don't think you have it right on this one. Yes, the turbos do, of course, heat up the coolant (as does the motor), but you shouldn't be losing any coolant unless you're boiling over or have a leak. Neil |

I don't mean every week you will have to add coolant. But over time, say every 15K miles... you WILL have to add some coolant. Say once per year. Most people noticed it when the weather turns cooler/colder.

I'm at 4 yrs and 45k miles and I have not added any fluids on my own. What is really nice is my av MPG is significantly going up lately. I'm now averaging 24mpg on daily suburb type driving.

I have an empty Autobahn with no speed limit a few klicks(kms) from my house. I normally average 20 or 21 mpg when I am driving "slow". When I am driving "fast" I average about 15 mpg. And when I drive very fast, I will only get about 9 mpg. I have drained my full fuel tank in as little as 122 miles. And I have gone WOT so long(30+ secs) that the HVAC system defaults to defrost vent output. When you go WOT so long there is no "saved" vacuum in the two vacuum reservoirs next to the coolant exp tank. Typically when I drive well over 160 mph, I will have to add some oil at the end of my trip. I doubt you encounter those things in the states. All that said... I can drive slowly and see up too 28 mpg, but I prefer to driver fast.
