Watchdog UK
So after watching the BMW theft problem on watchdog I rang my dealer this morning , who booked me in tomorrow for the fix for this , I asked if this is a sw update and answer was vague as though she did not really know so will check sw version and try to get more answers tomorrow
Has anybody else booked in yet ? |

BBC News.
My RSS feed on the BBC news is featuring a story including the clip from the white one stolen in the UK. BMW says that the ones made after September 2011 do not have this issue. If that's true my build was in October, I should be able to sleep better at night.
Any way to confirm this for sure? |

Important note: "BMW is not actively contacting owners, because it doesn’t see this as a recall situation, so it's up to all of us to spread the word: any BMW built before September 2011 and using the new electronic key system ('06 on) is eligible for the software update."

I am wondering if I can get this update, when it comes available, for my US spec 2008 135i while I am here in the UK? That is once it becomes available of course.

"What advice can you offer your customers?" "I am pleased to say that we have now had further information from our technical team which means that we will be able to offer the same mitigating measures mentioned in relation to X5 and X6, to any concerned BMW owners, starting within the next eight weeks. This will mean that the car cannot be taken using the piece of equipment you highlight. Of course this will not render the car unstealable, but it will address this particular form of attack. Any customer who is concerned about this issue can contact our customer service department on 0800 083 4397 or their dealer, either of which will happy to advise. This page was updated on 12 September 2012." http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006...eft-technology So today I phoned BMW customer service and they told me they have a fix for my 08/58 135i, they took my details and said they would pass them on to my local BMW dealer. I phoned two local BMW dealers who both said there is no fix available, they said they could only fix only the X5 and X6. So I called back BMW customer service only to be told that I should not have been told there was a fix in the first place as there is not one available yet. Mine survived a theft attempt and the dealer updated the software when they fixed the window. I was told that this was BMWs fix it but I have more confidence in the disabled OBD to be honest.
Its an early 2011 car. |

So i've disabled my OBD port on the car by switching the wire/pin arrangement behind the socket.....
Then we've got a male / female extension lead, spliced into its central loom and switched back the corrected pin wires that we modified on the car. So now when the car goes into the dealer or tuner I can simply give them the 'correcting' lead and it allows full functionality of the disabled OBD port! 1) I'll sleep easier at night! 2) The OBD socket on the car CAN NOT be read or interogated in any way! 3) I have an OBD wiring correction lead to keep at home / work in case the car needs to go to a dealers which makes the OBD readable again. 4) I am the only person who knows which wires / pins have been switched around. If anyone else is interested in this my business will be offering it as a service in our workshop to all BMW owners. I own a garage which helps! http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/ABPMotorsport Cheers, Chris |

It will be nine weeks on the 14th November since Watchdog first highlighted this OBD theft problem.
I contacted BMW customer service the day after Watchdog originally aired the program and they said they would be in contact when there is a fix. I phoned BMW customer service today and they told me they still don’t have a fix for a 08/58 135i. They also said that they had to add my details to the system again as they lost my original details because they had to create a new system to store all the affected vehicles. They also said they would not be writing to its customers as they would phone instead. |

My 1M is booked in tomorrow to get sorted but i'm still going to retain my additional OBD security for extra peace of mind!
