Oily Symptoms

Symptom A: Intermittent oily smell in cabin.

Symptom B: Oily residue on blow-off valves (see pictures).

Any ideas?

Yea... take it to a dealer. Ask them IF they have a Black UV light and dye kit. They make UV dyes that go in the oil. First they will wash the engine... then you drive the car... then when you go back they can use a black UV light to find where the oil is coming out of. That is how I would find a leak like that.

Good Luck

The dealer definitely needs to look at that. If you are stock and you are getting so much blow-by that it leaks out of your intake pipe like that you have a problem with the breather system at the very least.

I have an appointment for scheduled maintenance at the dealer tomorrow. I'm planning to bring this issue up as well. Will keep everybody updated on how that goes.

I wonder how robust the internal baffling is within the valve cover to prevent oil being sloshed into the PCV system? Could rapid directional changes cause something like this?

Might have you been driving on a rapid directional changing race track?

Blink once for yes, and twice for....

Seriously though... I would check your oil level first. Did you add any oil recently? Maybe it is over filled?

No comment on the first

I did check the oil level as soon as I smelled oil in the cabin and the level showed up as max. One point to note is that the sensor was un-characteristically quick at responding. Usually it takes over a minute (sometimes 2 to 3 minutes) to respond whereas this time it only took a couple of seconds.

I really wish they included a dipstick. I hate having to depend on the sensor.

Well... in the very least you should get your car maint done and they should wash your engine down. They should take some care in washing the engine bc you can get water down where it doesn't belong. Ask me how I know this! :")

Maybe they can change your engine oil, to make sure you have the correct oil level. That would not hurt things. And get you a base line to work from.

Good Luck - tomorrow,
David

I think the quick response is probably because the car had just done an automatic check of the level, and gave you those results. I've seen that before too.
