Plasti-Dip Speed Stripes
Hey guys,
I recently purchased an E82 AW 135i 6MTafter having an E88 AW 135i 6AT for a bit over 3 and a half years. Going from a car with no roof, to a car without even a sunroof was a bit of a change, not only because of the feeling of confinement but also because of the visual exterior style. I wanted something to break up the 'whiteness' of the roof and I thought that the car looked a little round and stumpy from front on but I didn't feel like going down the whole blacked out roof look so I decided to try something a bit different. I grabbed some cans of black Plasti-Dip ($26/can here in Australia ...), some 1 inch painters tape, some string and set to work. Overall it took me several hours to complete and I used 3 cans of plasti-dip. It's not perfect. Some of the edges weren't as smooth as I'd like and I accidentally touched some places when I was unmasking when the dip was still wet but I'm very happy with the finish of the coat and I managed to get the stripes nice and straight/even. Overall I'm quite satisfied and I'll probably redo the stripe/s that I accidentally messed up. I don't know if I achieved the desired effect of making the car look "wider" but I've always wanted a car with speed stripes and now I have one I also bought some AFE intake scoops and I plasti-dipped them a metallic yellow. You'll be able to see them in the front on shots. Happy to receive any constructive feedback. Otherwise, enjoy the photos P.S. Those blemishes on the boot lid are just some water and fingermarks. |

Its very bold, not bad. Good job man. I did my own plastidip stripes on my car too, I love how it changes the look. Now I don't look like the other 4 modded BSM 135i's in town, lol.

I saw that you waited until it dried and then separated it from the tape using a razor blade. No idea how you had the patience to do that haha. I just laid mine on thick and fast and pulled off the tape whilst still wet. |

Oh man believe me, I didn't do that intentionally lol. I didn't know to put one heavy coat and remove the tape, but I know now for next time!

If you do go about re-doing or changing your design it's not exactly one heavy coat. You apply the same as you would normally, light coats then gradually heavier but rather than waiting for it to dry you just keep going and going until you you're happy with the thickness and then pull the tape off as soon as possible. If you let it dry at all you'll end up with jagged edges. |

Hahaha! I thought with the matte black it would have been slightly more subtle but it turned out really dark. I'm really digging it at the moment. You don't see many 1'ers with stripes. Actually I'm not sure that I've ever seen any in Sydney with stripes. These days the only vehicles you see with stripes are swifts, minis and commodores.

very bold. id definitely like to see it in person. i kinda feel the middle stripe looks a little fat? maybe if you split that into half too? then youd really look like the gt500 iirc how its stripes look.

Chris, maybe you'll catch me driving around Fairfield/Cabra one day. Otherwise you can always pop by Fairfield, I'm here every day haha I played around with a few different thicknesses of middle and side stripes and in the end settled with the design I have now which I'm pretty happy with. The middle stripe needed to be somewhat fat because I wanted the side stripes to cover up the window washer jets as well. The split fat stripes are a bit 'too ford' for me which is why I chose this option. You also see them all the time on ford focus' and fiesta's so I opted for something that, whilst still a classic design, was a bit more unique. |
