E82 or E87?

I came across something strange this evening, was sorting out some paperwork and noticed on my car rego papers it said the model of my car was E87, i assumed it was a typo but when i checked the compliance sticker on the car it also said 1 series - E87??

Shouldn't it say E82?

Yep, my E82 also has E87 stamped on the plate in the engine bay.. Always thought it was strange but didn't think too much of it!

Thanks everyone, my mind is now at ease, still confused as to why its not E82 but if E87 is the norm i'm happy.

Perhaps compliance plate has E87 to indicate the platform?

The E82 and E88 are just variants of that.
