128i for sure. Like St|g says, don't be afraid of a road trip to find the right car. Living in the SF bay I had to order my car because everything on a dealer lot here is optioned out almost to the max. I didn't want the premium or tech packages.

After 5 years in my manual 128i and 50,000+ miles I couldn't care less about a 228i. If all you want is to be able to "mod" your car by installing a "flash" or "cpu update" or "whatever" I say go get a turbo bmw. If you want a balanced car that has a solid powerplant and drive train with 5 years of kinks worked out of it so it will be solid for you then I say go buy one of the last great cars to be made, a 128i.

Also what this guy said, my car is pretty minimal, no fancy headlights, no nav, no nothing a car doesn't need (not to mention all those things will seem dated in 2 years). If you want a great car to love don't buy one where the headlight costs $1500+ to replace when it goes bad out of warranty... I special ordered mine so it had everything I needed and nothing I didn't.

I like the power delivery on the 6cyl more than the one on the 4cyl turbo for the 3 series. I think it would hold the same for a 228i (M235i is out of my budget) Not to mention the weak EPS steering |

If BMW puts in the same steering system as the 328i you'll be very regretful. I bought my 128i to replace my 328xi because I can't stand BMWs new steering direction. Talk about lifeless.
The 328i in a manual was not inspiring. Just read you can't drive manual. Learn, get a 128i manual, or keep your current car. Why bother? The Steptronic sucks.

Just a personal preference, I'll go for a 128i (but try to get it in stick, if that's something you are interested in.) Not a big fan of the turbos, although the turbo lag on the BMW seems to be less as compared to others....also if you want to keep the car for over 5 years, then stay away from turbo engines, just talk to the original 335i owner who have over 80k on the clock, it truly becomes a money pit, and good luck if you run JB4 (some say that BMW has improved on the turbo engine design/durability but I personally don't buy it)

IMHO, the amount of torque available at low rpm's in the 128 makes learning to drive a 128 stick easy to do. I have an easier time teaching my kids to drive a stick in the 128 than in my Focus.

This. Just learn to drive stick. I got a steptronic and it drives me crazy every day. With that said, I came from a 6MT, so it was a stupid decision to begin with. The car definitely begs for a manual tranny, steptronic doesn't do it justice.

The N20 228i is for someone after HP #'s. I recall a stage 2 tune N20 pushes 290hp @ crank with exhaust right now (just above the FBO 128i at 270 ish hp). Then people will start adding meth kits and all that to break 300hp. But have you considered if the other mods we love on the e8x 128i will come over to the 228i? Things like M3 control arms & Subframe bushes, long term reliability ( no carbon buildup or fuel pump issues), no idrive & no sunroof, the six cylinder sound, and the fact that BMW has made a 1m on the same platform. Hence e82 for me. 228i for me has drawbacks: its looks ( not sold on them yet), electronic steering, 4 cyl engine (bmw for me is mostly 6) , limited colour offerings, and unknown M3 control arm compatibility. If I had to buy a 228i at this stage I would do the following: Buy it in ValenciaOrange or Red, skip the M pack, get the sport pack instead (black window trim), skip the suspension upgrade (go aftermarket), sport seats, minimal everything else .

I'd be curious to read the responses to this thread if you posted it over to 2addicts as well
I have to add to others here saying: Get the manual. The automatic transmission in the 128i is really not very good (I've driven it). Having a 6MT will make all the difference. Learning can seem hard after your first time spent stalling the car all afternoon, but the lifetime of enjoyment you will get thereafter is worth it.

I dont know about you guys, but i drove a 328i loaner with that NA engine and it was horrible compared to my 135i. The power is unusable as you have to rev it really hard to get anything and it just seemed to make a lot of noise but not a lot of speed, at least compared to my 135i. The 328i with the turbo felt leagues closer to my 135i in terms of torque so i wouldn't hesitate to wait on the 228i.

That said, as much as I love the driving feel of my 128i, the 228i will likely have better performance (in terms of laptimes in driving tests) than the 128i, similar to how the m235i will have better performance than the 135i. Technology marches onwards. Also, 6MT > AT on the 128i as there's no DCT option on the automatic. The time I picked up my 128i from the dealer, I had a total of 1 hour of experience driving a manual car. I'm still practicing to get better rev-matched downshifts and starting to try heel-toe 2 months afterwards but it was really easy to get the basics down. I was able to commute to work in the car the next day after getting it. |

Here is my .02 cents. I just purchased and took delivery of a 2013 128i with the Sport Package. What I found hard was the 6MT. I looked at 20 or so 128's and 135's and mine was the only 128i with the 6MT. They had one 135i with the 6MT but it was 39K, too much for me.
As for discounts, my car with all the options, stickered for $35,995 I bought the car for $27,495. Since I'm military I got a 10% discount off the bat, then another 10% from BMW. SO if you ask there are programs and discounts available. I test drove a 228i before I got my 128i and it feels numb compared to the 1er. lack of steering feel and it felt heavy on it's feet. Not that I was considering the 228i, but they had me test drive it because my 128i was on the other side of Germany. I live 30 minutes from the BMW Assembly plant in Munich. |

The DISA manifold makes things right. Next the e82 is lighter. So it adds up to be a agile car over a 328i loaner. Quote:

It was an actual 2 series. It was a demo car. Honestly it felt "softer" and more disconnected. It looks hella good though. Just imagine a 3 series coupe and that's what ya got. I would imagine a 235i with m sport package would be a pretty good car. My buddie has an S6 Audi and he said my 1 series was too small for him but the 2 was perfect. The day I test drove the 2 series I also got to test drive a M3 and a 135i. They wanted to keep me entertained while they did paper work. They 228i was dark blue with the black mad silver sport line interior. It looked really nice, but I just could spend 10 grand more. It was out of my budget. I'd say if your a bigger fella or lady the 2 series might be better for you.

Exactly. Properly optioned and with a few supporting mods(none of which impact reliability), the 128i should have a better power to weight ratio than a stock 135i.

I had a 328xi service loaner for a couple days. Numb steering, lifeless, noisy engine. Not a fan. That electric steering reminded me of a Hyundai Sonota's vague feel.

My sales rep was very generous, when I took delivery I got a bottle of champagne and a BMW fleece jacket. I just asked if I could test drive them. I was suprised when they said yes. |
