My guess is BMW thinks it would be a brand image problem with hatchbacks being seen as economy cars in the US. Same reason they're unlikely to bring over a 116i (or rather, put that engine in anything in the US) due to the engine power. They'd just cut into Mini sales rather than steal sales from other companies.
