Coil Packs fail during 2-3 Shifts?

On two separate occasions now i have had coil packs die on me while shifting from second to third under a decent throttle load. The coils that have died on me are on cylinders 1 and 6. Is there a coincidence they die on 2-3 shifts or do coils just go extremely randomly?

Anybody else have coil packs die on heavy 2-3rd gear shifting?

Seems odd you can nail down the exact moment a coil pack failed. How sure of that are you, and what is your evidence?

Since you are tuned - you can't expect stock parts to last forever. And we all know that the coil packs will need to be replaced sooner or later. Sooner in your case. Btw... how old are your spark plugs? You should be changing them every ~20 to 25K miles or so. With a tune... you are producing more boost... so that tends to blow out the spark. That puts a lot of stress on the plugs and coil packs. Next thing will be injectors, since you are probably at their max flow rates. G.L. Dack

If you fouled your plugs with the first failed coils in cylinder 1+6 , you should have replaced the plugs while replacing the coil. Some people clean them and have had success but if you are going to take the covers and more all apart why not change the plugs as well. When you change them this time around , look to see if only one leg of the spark plug is fouled. Could indicate an injector spray pattern failure .

I just replaced my coil-packs w/ new ones.... but I have a different problem so that leaves me w/ a complete set. Yes, they're used, but if you're interested in taking the set off me let me know. They are very clean, no corrosion, and I believe the first time they were removed was by me was this past weekend. let me know!

The reason i know that was the exact moment it failed then was the massive misfire i received afterwards and the car sounded like an STI running on only 5 cylinders and shaking terribly like a 60's Cammed out muscle car. The exact same scenario happened when the cylinder 1 failed.

My spark plugs are about due as i am approaching 20k on them i plan on changing soon. I could not find my socket for the plugs or i would have changed them while i was in there. I don't expect the parts to last forever just wondering if anybody else had their coil packs die on 2nd to 3rd gear shifts?

I blew a coil on my S54 from an easy shift from 1st to 2nd and started giving it gas in second when I blew it. So the engine was under load.

And yes, the S54 sounded like a boxer engine as well
