I never understood this. SULEV cars have the DISA stock so they must be selling replacement parts, no? Or do they not sell it separately? I'm guessing it'll be way more expensive than getting it in a junkyard.

I got mine on car-part from a SULEV n51 328xi for $280 shipped with both DISA motors, looked fairly new when i got it too. There pretty easy to find if you know what to search for.

Buying it new makes it a $1k+ project instead of a $250 project.

What draws me to this engine is sound and linear power delivery. Those two things aren't coming from any turbo motor I know of. My bro has a JB4 335i which I can drive if I need to. I drove it for a week one time and It's really great, you can stomp on basically any car on the road just putting your foot down in the current gear lol and I am jealous of that aspect of it. However, I think my car is bit more fun. In all seriousness it's doing about 260hp and that combined with ~3100 curb weight makes for a really fun and balanced car. It's good enough and fast enough for me to the point where buying a 135 just so I can go faster is not worth the trade off of the other aspects I enjoy. The fact that I've driven the 335i enough to know what its about helps a little too And I'm also more of a suspension guru at the moment. |

This car has such spectacular potential in this area it is almost a shame that such big power mods exist for the 135i. Overshadow what is really the E82's greatest strength.

It's pretty simple, really. The N52 was produced in both high output (OL) and lower output (UL) versions. Per BMW's own documentation (see attached), the difference comes down to the fact that "the “UL” engine will have no DISA and will have changes in the DME programming and exhaust system." So throw in a DISA manifold, some headers, and flash the DME, and you effectively undo the detuning that BMW did. I don't believe that there is a bigger power upgrade for this engine, nor do I believe there is much HP left on the table afterwards. Some folks say the DISA units are hard to come by used - I can only speak to my experience, but I found a very good example (only 5K miles) the first week I looked. Definitely worth the look because, as Stig noted, a new unit will run you 4x as much. There are only two headers I would consider running on my car at this point - Supersprints (not cheap) and Active's new set (surprisingly affordable). I would run an Active or an Evolve tune. I think Active is easier to deal with in the US, but YMMV. I personally am very happy with my AA tune, and plan to go back to them once I have headers installed.
