Question What type of battery is this?

Hi All,

Can someone tell me what type of battery this is? (e.g. AGM, etc.)

I tried looking up the p/n but can't seem to find the exact match.

Thank you!

Looks like a standard lead-acid battery.

If you're replacing it the new battery will need to be coded to the vehicle.

I've been told the 90Ah 720A batteries are AGM. Take it out of the car and give it a good shake; if it sloshes, it's basic lead-acid; no slosh == AGM. Either way, a good strategy is to email the fine folks (no affiliation) at GetBMWParts with your s/n, they'll tell you what the correct (same specs) replacement is.

Don't put in a new battery without registering it, don't change battery types without coding the replacement (and then registering it).

You can buy a <$100 cable with some "unsupported" software from these guys that will let you do everything necessary to code the battery. I think bavtech cable / sw may be able to as well but don't quote me on that.

I've been told by the SA that the battery can be disconnected and reconnected without doing any software updates or changes. Why would this be done? For certain kinds of service.

Assuming this is true, why can't the old battery be replaced with a new identical battery without coding and registering? Also what happens if you replace the battery with another brand?

You don't need to take the battery out and shake it. If it has a magic-eye (that sight glass that indicates state of health), it's a standard lead-acid battery.

The battery needs to be registered so the power management system has a correct baseline for operation (charging intensity, level of consumer operation).

Wow! I didn't expect this much traction on this thread!

It is indeed the lead-acid battery. I am not replacing it (yet), but great info itt

Is the magic eye the same that is supposed to be the colour green when the battery is healthy?

Yup.

But as someone else mentioned it only indicates the health of one of the six cells in the battery...
