Bmw oil WTF
Was at the dealer and for giggles I asked what a quart of oil would cost. Turns out they are cheaper than Mobil.
BMW synthetic 5w30: 9.99/litre Mobil1 0w40: 16.99/litre Has anyone else seen this? |

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mo...l#.VjosfGqFNhE Currently listed as roughly 12.99/litre. I'm sure you could buy cheaper elsewhere. Also, it's not quite an apples to apples comparison.... |

Must be nice. Next time I'm down there I will pick up as many as I can bring back. I've never seen the Mobil 0w40 in the big jugs here. ([edit] I've been going to the wrong store.) I've been buying cases for years but from now on I'll probably just buy the BMW oil. The SA said the BMW oil as full synthetic but it does not say that on the bottle. Is it actually synthetic or am I paying 10$/litre for dino oil? Last edited by Fast.asleep; 11-04-2015 at 10:58 AM.. |

Just used the product finder and it looks like a lot of stores in calgary have the jug. Just not mine...
Interested to know what people think of the BMW oil. Is it comparable to Mobil or not? |

I would look at it this way - BMW tested the car with the oil you can buy from them, they provide you warranty on the car in that state. If you don't have any special conditions that warrant a specific change to the type of oil (ie heavy track days, very dirty/dusty environment, etc), and the BMW oil is as cheap if not cheaper than other brands then I see absolutely no harm in just using the BMW stuff. You could even do your oil changes more frequently to add safety margin.... |

I just buy my oil (Motul 5W40) on Amazon.com and go and pick it up at a drop center in the US. $166 US for a case of 20L. So $8.30/L. |

Most UPS stores offer this service. I use the UPS store in Ogdensburg, NY, along with everybody else in Ottawa.
Just picked up another case last weekend, along with some Redline gear oil for the rear diff, and a bunch of stuff from ECS. |

There are some oils that have a high Group III content and still meet the LL-01 certification, though I'm not sure I would call them "full synthetic". I think some Motul blends use very little to no Group III content and have more Group IV/V content, hence they are usually more expensive. The best way to tell is to look at the German version/counterpart of the product and see what they are called to determine if they are a "full synthetic" or not. Most companies use the same blend worldwide and just change the marketing of the product by country. |
