Fix for rusty rear rotors?
So I'm debating changing out my rear rotors since they are really rusty and are a sore sight on the car. I tried to get the stealer to swap them out twice and they didn't budge claiming they were "within spec". So I assume the new oem ones will end up rusty too, any aftermarket recommendations that don't rust?
*When i mean rust I refer to the hub center part not the braking surface which always rust after a carwash or rain.

Just sand it down to metal and paint it with some high-temp paint. There's tons of DIY's on this.

Yeah I was trying to avoid that and just buy some that don't rust. That was the first thing that came to mind.

If they've rusted though you'll just have to refinish them.

I get cross-drilled when I replace my OEMs because I like the look. Some racing enthusiasts may tell you to avoid cross-drilled because they might crack but I've seen no evidence of this when bought from reputable manufacturers and the cars are not tracked. Where you can run into trouble is parts dealers who buy low end solid rotors and then send them to a local machine shop to drill. Many cars have cross-drilled as OEM. |

I'm pretty sure all hubs are going to have some type of rust on them. And I believe its a surface rust rather than a rust that is going to penetrate it. It makes no sense to replace something that just has surface rust.
You will be save a lot of money by just taking the tires off, getting the surface rust off by sand paper, then painting it with the appropriate paint. Something that will stop the rust from ever forming again. Go look at any vehicle that has unpainted hubs and they will look like yours. Its honestly nothing to worry about. Because if it was, then manufacturers would have done something many, many years ago. |
