N55 LPFP Failure - Updated
2011 135i N55 DCT - Build Date 04/10. 76K miles
Had the LPFP go out. Start up in the morning and when I tried to give it gas, the whole car would shudder. After about 4 miles of light driving, it finally threw a code. I was able to drive it 25 miles to the stealer. They changed out the pressure unit and the filter. Part numbers 16147163298 and 16117163295. Says they drained the fuel tank as well. Comments said: Worn fuel pump caused clogged fuel filter and low delivery pressure at times. DME fault 2C01 stored. |

Sorry to hear this. I have a MY2011 N55 DCT 08/10 build date with 80K miles. Pretty similar to your car and have never had this kind of problem.
What kind of fuel have you been using? Do you run a tune or any mods?

I figure 781 is on the high side of the going rate but I did get a free service loaner in the process. |

Ok. Two weeks since the LPFP was replaced and I had the same problem with the car this morning. No codes this event.
What do you all think? Is it the HPFP? |

Try switching where you buy your fuel. Perhaps their tanks have water in it or perhaps they aren't selling top tier fuel like you think.
You can have your fuel tested by a lab - so see whats really in it. I'm kind of surprised that the LPFP was covered under the emission warranty. ? Maybe look under your hood to see what region your car was built for. ie: California specs or LEV or SULEV - those regions/specs have longer emissions warranties.

It doesn't sound like an HPFP issue based on my experience. I just replaced mine a few weeks ago. Usually you know the HPFP is going out because you get long cranks when you start the car, like the battery is going out.

The start was on the rough side and then smoothed out some. I let it idle for a few minutes before trying to drive it. Once I began to get on the gas and got up to around 20 mph the car began to stutter and threw the code. I did pick up a HPFP yesterday at bmwparts. I'll install it tomorrow and see if that fixes it. |

I thought all the N55s had the newest 170 pump. The pump swap is complete and the car fired right up with no leaks. I guess I did it right. Total time was 3 hours taking my time with a 10 minute break in the middle. Update: It has been a few days and the car starts better than it has in a year of longish cranks. Starts up lots quicker now. This problem was definitely the HPFP. |

Glad it worked. I knew it was not normal because it kept on getting worse. At first the long crank would happen once every month, then every week, then it would happen on every cold start. That's when I replaced mine. I used the 446 model though. I searched and searched and found conflicting comments on which was the newer part. I went with the 446 because I figured the higher part number was the newer part.
Just double checked the one I pulled out of the car was a 170, well that is what I am guessing. The number on the part was 7615617-01 Last edited by DTM135i; 10-14-2016 at 10:33 AM.. Reason: New info |

How has that HPFP been working out for you? Mine already seems to be giving me problems again. But different than last time. It still fires up quickly but if it is really cold it will immediately die like it's not getting enough fuel and one regular days it sounds like it is going to stall on initial start up but it doesn't.
