Start w/out key?

I have a 2011 135i. Oddly today I got to work, pushed the button to turn off the car, removed the key from the key slot AND then pushed the button and the car started.

I do not have comfort access. So... huh?

Been around for a year+, so surely you've run your VIN

Wouldn't hold my breath on having CA and not being aware, but would make a pretty cool x-mas present from your car to you

Might I suggest the following experiment:
- duplicate the previous result
- then try this, stop the engine and remove the key, then, before restarting, open and close the driver's door

If your door has these lines in the door handle and your remote has the battery compartment then you have CA, so I was told.

I definitely don't have CA. I have the standard remote.

So can you drive it w/ out the key or will it eventually stop?

I have not tried yet but I think the seller told me that the key needs to be in to drive, to open the doors fob can stay in pocket.

I've done this a few times moving the car around in the garage. Once the car has been started and shut down you can start the car without the key for a little while.

you can drive with the key removed like that as long as you'd like but keep in mind us 1ers without CA arent used to it so be careful dont lose your keys or else once you turn it off you are screwed!

I heard it's a safety feature. So if someone takes your keys you can still get away.

This works on 3 Series as well and probably most other BMW's that don't have CA. It's a pretty cool feature!
