DCT is annoying me. Is this behaviour normal?
Out of the 2008 335i MT6 and in to a 2013 135i DCT.
So far I'm loving this car! I usually go with MT but wanted to try an automatic this time around. I love it for the most part but have on annoying issue so I want to know... Is this behaviour normal? Is there a fix? Issue is this. From a stop it takes prob 2 full seconds from the time I press the accelerator to when the engine responds to my demand and the car starts to move. I often push the peddal too far in my haste and the car takes off with more power than I want. I'm not getting used to this and the delay is the same in normal drive and in sport mode. Is it normal? Is there a fix? Thanks all!!! |

There are others who have issues with the DCT. Here's a thread about it and some solutions.

Ya I don't know that I'm even having a "problem" no stalling or idle issues no prob with AC on (idle at times raises to 900 rpm though). So are you suggesting that the delay in response is not normal?

It's probably throttle lag, and it shouldn't be considered normal, but others have it as well. Do a search for more info. There are several threads about it.

I have always had it on my 2013 which I bought in January 2018. New transmission installed in January 2019 and still same kind of response. It is very annoying to have that delay with trying to accelerate and actually going. However, with the quick shifts going on to a freeway feeling great it is easy to forget about

I had the same problems. The dealer did a software update that smoothed everything out. The only problem was the update took a day to download! Anyway, it has been a couple of years without any issues.

My car has had the PPK1 since pretty much brand new. Legend has it that it is the reason my car has none of the issues people complain about in regards to the DCT.
Also, people say that if you flash MHD stage 1, that too fixes the DCT programming. So you have options. |

The thread Esteban provided the link to is the thread I started. Contrary to what many people say, if you really have this problem in a bad way, none of the software updates will fix this problem. None. I know as I've tried all the available software fixes which did not fix the throttle lag issue. In fact, my problems were more severe than most as I've had my car want to jump forward and if my foot wasn't on the brakes, I would have smacked the car right in front of me in rush hour traffic. I've also had the car drop into a false neutral during that same episode.
Only after an astute dealer mechanic looked into my car was the problem more or less has been permanently fixed. I do have occasions where there is a slight lag but it's so infrequent, I don't worry about the problem anymore. And to repeat what I've attempted, I've done the PPK, SIB update, and a Dinan S2 tune. |

OP update/corrections...
So I drove around to more or less nail down the circumstances under which this lag occurs. I found that it does not matter one bit whether I'm in Drive, Sport (button), Sport (shifter to the left) or Manual mode. In fact I noticed that Manual mode is best to diagnose this since it takes waiting on shifts out of the equation. Free revving in park there is no real lag. Maybe a tiny bit but similar to a lot of cars out there I do not feel much lag from a dead stop. Similar response as free revving. When creeping or slowing for a speed bump or a tight turn, this is when the problem is the worst. Slow down to a crawl in 1st gear, add gas, wait, call up my favorite playlist, wait, eat a sandwich, wait some more, go. It is bad in So Cal stop and go traffic which is unfortunately my daily commute reality. So I think I'm going to try the PPK update. Some say it helps, some say no. I'll be the judge! LOL |

I will add that I bought my car in January 2018 and then added PPK1 & PE in Feb/Mar 2018 and I still had the same issues. Shifting often felt lagged and after a new clutch it still feels lagged to me personally. I am in So Cal (OC) if anyone wants to try it out. I will likely be selling the car in the near future as my 3rd party warranty is almost out due to an oil leak, evaporator and transmission fix in a year. Love my 1 series, but looking forward to the next car.

Ya man I hear you. I mean I want do do the PPK regardless so no money lost there. I am looking into resetting adaptations too. Do you know if this can only be done by a dealer?
Much appreciate the info and advise you've provided! |

My dealer was the one that finally fixed my problem with resetting the adaptations. Did you look at my thread? The link Esteban posted? Because what I listed there was the exact notes from the BMW dealer tech who did the work on my car.

Yes, I read both threads. I was only asking if this "Resetting adaptations" can only be done by a dealer. Keep in mind, your issues were very different and more severe than mine. Compared to yours, what I am dealing with is a slight annoyance. I'm more in learning/tinkering mode right now; not ready to go to the dealer just yet. I performed a Reset Adaptions on my 335 and it did help with an issue I was having at the time. This was a simple procedure that anyone can do in the driveway. That's why I was asking...

I think my issues are similar to yours, and I've found that when I feather the throttle like a stick, it's better. When. I treat it like an auto, it's very herky jerky - but I have to pay attention.

Just FYI when you flash the PPK it also includes a reset of the adaptations.

I don't think that's the case as the problems I had didn't go away with the PPK flash. Nor did they go away with the SIB firmware update. Nor did it go away with the Dinan S2 tune. The only time the issue was resolved was when the dealer tech explicitly did the adaptations reset. Since that was done, the problem has been pretty much resolved for now about 3 years.

Well you all can argue until the cows come home, but it won't do you any good.
First, the One does have an inherent amount of turbo lag. Nothing is going to fix it. The software update is the only solution to your problem. Unfortunately the update is a lengthy process. I wouldn't be surprised the dealer doesn't want to be bothered with it and does some perfunctory repair that doesn't take up much of his time. And speaking of all the symptoms mentioned, my car had them all. When brought to an idle at a stop, it would stall, hardly idle, sometimes jump ahead without warning, and in short a PITA to drive. If the dealer doesn't fix it, you'll have to get tough with him and become a bigger PITA than the car. Letters to BMW & the BBB will get his attention. You might even stand outside his dealership with a nasty sign accusing him of some terrible inhuman infraction! Always remember The squeaky wheel always gets the grease! |
