Shift Knob and gear selector switch FAULTY

My 2011 135i won’t shift into gear. No gear light or any gear. I tried the unlock function from manual. Still nothing. Local dealer says I need a new shift knob and gear selector switch …. True? Expensive? How would something like this break.
