DIY: Koni Yellow Adjustment Tool

This is something that's been driving me crazy for years: no one makes a good Koni adjustment tool to get down into shock/strut towers!

I think I've finally cracked the code with $16 and a metal saw. Behold, my masterpiece:



Here's how to make your own:

Step 1: Acquire this stainless valve core tool

Step 2: Remove the keyring.

Step 3: We only want to use the larger end and want it to be as short as possible while retaining some of the hex to grab onto, so cut that mother down, about here-ish:



I chucked it up in a vice and used a flush cut tool:



It left a nice lip that I filed down to end up with this:



Step 4: Drop it into a 1/4in bit driver of your choice (I used this one since it's 6 bucks) with a dab of glue.



Step 5: Profit. Stick it down into whatever hole you need to adjust your Konis at will. I had three different models of Koni in the garage that I tested it on and it fit all of them well, despite wildly varying adjustment key shapes/sizes.

Note that my reason for doing this instead of just cutting a slot in a driver shaft is that I wanted the 1/4in hex to act as a guide sleeve to keep the bit centered on the adjustment key. You can see it well here:



Other options depending on your preference/application:

Mini ratchet and bit holder for low profile situations


T handle driver to make it easier to see if you've turned 90/180/etc degrees

Bendy boy to really get down in there

*Note that the bit is indeed real stainless, so the magnet in the driver will do nothing to hold it in — you'll need to add a spot of glue.

If you don't have a favorite glue, this one is my go-to because it sticks to everything and remains flexible instead of chipping off. I've used it in the engine bay of cars before and it held up great.
