Upper rad hose woes

hey y'all,

Been working on my 128 cause my eac sensor fell off the rad after i adhered it down. in removing the rad fan, i broke the reservoir coolant hose nipple off the upper rad hose. seeing that oem was 90 bucks, i ordered a rein hose as i used them for the lower and replacing the ones around the thermostat.

well for some reason, as has been documented before, the rein one does not fit snuggly on the radiator and can lead to leaks down the line.

I ordered a febi bilstein one as well but it is nearly an inch and a half longer than the oem one, and the rad side connector would not slide on, even after lubing with coolant.

Has anyone else run into this? did you end up going oem or finding a rein/febi one that worked?

You got the wrong part likely for the 135i.

I have a mixture of rein, febi, and genuine. Basically whatever was available. I've now replaced every coolant hose in the system with new at 15y. No issues finally.

I used part number 17127531579, real oem shows that as the number for the n52 and n51

I just got an OEM one when I managed to do the exact same thing. And go figure, the line from there to the reservoir was perfectly fine. But that nipple broke when I barely touched it.

Did getting that SOB off the radiator feel like defusing a bomb? Sure did for me.

Happened to me when I was replacing the pulley/belts. It was bound to happen according to all of the tutorials & posts so perfect opportunity to do some more maintenance & practice patience waiting a week for FCP to ship.

Also replaced the coolant reservoir hose while we're at it. Upper Rad Hose was Rein & Coolant Res Hose was Genuine BMW.

Really hope that all the coolant that was leaking in the meantime didn't ruin the parts around it though.

I did the same, all new hoses when I replaced my turbos. My one suggestion is to rub a thin film of silicone lubricant on the hose attachment o-rings. Makes installation much easier and reduces the risk of damaging or rolling the o-rings.

So I fit the replacement rein hose on and it feels quite snug. I will run it for the time being but have an oem hose on the way as well. Will report back on findings

I have a Febi Bilstein I got from ECS on my 128 and a Genuine BMW on my 328, both new within the past year. Both were a little stiff and had to be muscled on but fit as they should. On the 328, I did have to file down a tab on the new replacement CSX radiator that was not fitting quite right into a notch in the hose fitting. Once that was done, it slid right on.

While you all are on the hose talk. This small hose that runs over the radiator is pretty fragile. Often gets overlooked until the tow truck is called.

Good call out. I did actually grab a replacement since the old nipple on the upper rad broke into the rubber so I decided to go ahead and swap out anyways lol

So oem hose arrived and lo and behold it fit the best. Put that on and will be returning my rein and febi ones.

I do have a cts radiator so in case someone in the future has the same issue, go ahead and just buy oem

I do think they make great products, I e used them in other areas but it just didn’t work for me here
