National Acadian Day ~ 15th of August.

There's going to be a lot of partying and noise in the region today. I live in the heart of Acadia where it all began. I'm up early because I am involve with the Historical Committee and will be giving a presentation at the local community center.

"The Grand Tintamarre 2026 takes place on August 15, 2026, Acadian National Day. This festive and noisy event brings together thousands of participants who bang pots and pans and honk their horns to affirm their Acadian pride."

My late wife’s family was originally from Acadia, who then migrated to south Louisiana.

Sorry, but unless someone records me on their phone, there won't be a video. And I don't really understand what you mean by "sans pans".

Really would like to know more about the event - have little knowledge of Acadians other than the migration to LA.

Sans pans just meant without the banging of the pans!

That’s about what I already knew (with a bit more detail), but I had no idea there was still an Acadian community in Canada, or a celebration/commemoration.

The written term "Cajun" first appeared in the United States during the American Civil War in 1863. It evolved as an anglicized, phonetic spelling of Cadien, a shortened spoken version of the French word Acadien (referring to the exiled people of Acadia).
Evolution of the Word
  • Spoken Origins: Acadians who settled in Louisiana in the 18th century referred to themselves in French as les Acadiens or shortened it to le 'Cadiens by dropping the initial "A".
  • English Adaptation: English speakers in Louisiana struggled to pronounce the French Cadien, transforming it phonetically into "Cajun".
  • First Written Record: In 1863, Lieutenant George C. Harding of the 21st Indiana Infantry used the written word "Cajun" in an account describing the inhabitants around Vermilionville (now Lafayette, Louisiana) during the Union army's invasion.
  • Social Shift: For many decades, the term was used by outsiders as a slight or label for impoverished rural folk, but by the mid-to-late 20th century, the community embraced it with pride.
