1 coupé canadian price?
There is no doubt the 135i will be very expensive.....it is clearly a high performance model....almost a Mini M car....(Brenbo brakes...M package...etc...)
My guess is 128i around 35.000$ Cdn and 135i around 45.000$Cdn One should look against which car the 1 serie will have to compete: here in canada for the 128: 1-Audi A3 2.0T 200hp 33.800$cdn 2-Volvo T5 218hp 31995$cdn 3-Mercedes B200 turbo 200hp 35400$cdn 4-323i 200hp 35600$cdn 5-328isedan 41000$cdn 6-328icoupé 43600$cdn For the 135i: 1-Audi A3 3.2 Quattro Sline Stronic 250hp 45690$cdn (a fiasco.....no one is buynig it too expensive) 2-335i sedan 49900$cdn 3-335i coupé 51600$cdn |

I originally guessed that it would be around $30kCAD for a 128i and $40kCAD for a 135i. Maybe that was just wishful thinking, because after seeing your list of cars and prices, BMW will probably charge as you said closer to 35kCAD and $45kCAD repectively and still be competitive.
By the way, those prices are base MSRP and the problem with BMW, and other European manufacturers for that matter, is that the options are really expensive. So to get a 128i all decked out with the aero kit, sport package, xenon lights (stuff that the 135i has that the 128i doesn't according to the BMW USA 1-series microsite), you're probably going to be looking at $40kCAD... yikes! |

I can handle $35K for a 128i so long as it comes reasonably well equipped. I need some room in the budget to include a sport package, metallic paint and the iPod connection. The B200 turbo comes in well equipped out of thr box, if that's a reasonable frame of reference.

I'm looking at getting a nicely equipped 135i Cabriolet, so you know that I'm totally screwed relative to U.S. pricing.
Based on your estimates, I'm figuring on a base MSRP on the 135i Cab of $55K Cdn and $60K with a few options, plus 14% PST/GST and I'm looking at close to $70K Cdn.. If I'm correct, I'll be rethinking the 1er as my next ride. :iono: :eyebulge: |

So, about $10US for the 128i and $12US for the 135i? That sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me, eh?

Back when I went to the University of Michigan in 1997, I had a couple Canadian friends in school with me. By our sophomore year, they had to look elsewhere because the Canadian Dollar was getting so weak. I was pretty sad to see them cheated out of a good education just for that reason. But, then again, out of state tuition at UofM is ridiculous to begin with.... It's good to see the Canuck Dollar finally doing well. Canadians are generally friendly and having Windsor 40 minutes away at the age of 19 was a blessing!

If that's within your tolerance, I think you'll be happy with the outcome. I think $55K for a stock 135i Cab will almost price it out of the market - that's $5K more than a 335i Coupé... I don't think you're way off, but I would expect a 135i Cab to come in at about $50K, with the 135i Coupé at about $45K...

45K for a 135 is a lot of coin. Most of the BMW buyers (aka posers) will probably just pay the extra couple of thousand and get themselves into an e90/92. I can't see this car being a success at those prices. Look at the competing cars listed. The audi, volvo, and mercedes do not sell very well to my knowledge (I hardly see any of them around here). The Audi A3 has been a sales disaster in the United States due to the high price tag. BMW needs to learn from the mistakes made by their competitors, not repeat them.
If I were to price both cars, I'd put the 128 at 32,000 and change, right where the old e36 318 used to be (BMW has not had a car in that price point since that particular model). And I'd put the 135 at 38,000 or 39,000. A 6-7k difference is substantial enough between the two to justify settling for a 128 over a 135 for the budget conscious buyers. |

The A3 is overpriced and has been a disaster, especially with the 3.0 selling somewhere in the $45K range. Couldn't agree more that BMW has to learn from this. And using the $50K 335i as a benchmark, not sure $45K is way off. 135i will come with the M Sport kit and have the same engine with better performance. 335i will offer a little more than more space and maybe a cushier ride. 135i may be competitive at that price..... But I'd love to be wrong....

BMW should be using this car to bring new buyers into the BMW family like the lower end e36's used to, not to give their current buyers another car to choose from at the same relative price point. As said, most of these buyers if given the choice will go for the 'better' car (ie. 3 series) because they feel they are getting more for their money. Bottom line, let's hope BMW Canada doesn't screw this up, otherwise the 1 series will be an unmitigated disaster like the 318ti and we will see it on our shores for no more than 3 or 4 years before it heads back to Europe permanently. |

Again, they share the same exact powerplant (read: no detuning... which would make it a different powerplant). Every press release states 306 horsepower for the 135i (in European markets; 300 in the US) which is exactly the same as the 335i.

I think there is only one N54 engine right now and it produces roughly 300hp and 300ft-lb. I think you're thinking of the N52 in the 128i, which will be the de-tuned 230hp version, the same one that's found in the 328i sedan and coupe. The 260hp version of the N52 is used mostly in the X3 and X5.
I think $45k for the 135i would be more than the market could bear. Based on the comments so far, I'm going to change my guess to $41k for the 135i and $33k for the 128i. There needs to be a significant cost differential between the two and you could still option out a 128i (even with the cost of BMW options) and still be $4k less than a base 135i. It all depends on what the equipment level will be for the base models. |

I'd love to see the 128i around 33K but I don't think it's going to happen. That is about the same price as a WRX, a Mazda 3 Mazdaspeed, or a Cooper S with a few options, and BMW will charge a few G's over those cars. The best we can probably expect is $35-36K, with the 335i up at $42K.
Anyone know if BMW Canada will honour the warranty of a US-bought car? If BMW Canada screws us on the exchange to the tune of $5000+ I would seriously consider buying in the States, provided the warranty and 4 years of free service carries over. |

The market isn't made up entirely of BMW enthusiasts, so even as good as the 1er may be in terms of performance, handling, etc. the majority of premuim compact buyers are going to look at the practical benefits of the Mercedes and the Audi, as well. So I'd say $36K is realistically the maximum entry-level price for the 1er. A 128i at that price would be pushing $40K pretty quickly with sport and premium packages. Any more and it gets really close to the 135i, which, if at $42K, would start to look too good to pass up. At $33K I think BMW would decimate the competition with this car... I'm such a flip flopper.....
