The new EVO sucks. The only thing I can give them credit for is the dual clutch. I am also turned off by the pricing, 50,000 for an EVO to the dealership I went too, F*&* that. I hope to get my 135i in late summer.

Where does BMW say that? I heard it was impossible to try to shift as fast as the automatic in M or DS mode ??

"No matter whether one gear step or several gear steps are shifted, the response time remains the same. And the latter is extremely low: If - at an approximate driving speed of 70 km/h in the sixth gear- a kickdown signal is received, then the automatic 6-speed transmission needs just 100 milliseconds in order to trigger the rapid changeover from the sixth into the second gear. All in all, ZF was capable of reducing the shift time by half in relation to its previous transmissions." This is from the ZF press release http://www.zf.com/content/en/import/...jsp?dbID=23483 I don't know of anyone who can shift in just 100 milliseconds... did you blink you've already shifted twice.. ?? Every TV show I've seen that's pulled 4.7 or 4.8 seconds to 60 is using the "plain jane automatic"

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx Manual 5.1 seconds Auto 5.2 seconds Your point is a good one, who can shift in 100 milliseconds?!? Not me. I have the auto and love it. The only complaint is the paddle shifters. I wish they were setup Ferrari-style. Up on the right down on the left, instead of both paddles set up to both up & down shift. |

Given that the EVO is less than 300hp and AWD what's the big surprise?
Two VERY different cars.

Magazines that actually tested the car - pulled some numbers..
Road and Track tested a manual tranny and pulled 4.8 seconds consistantly in a run to 60 with a 13.4 @ 104 mph 1/4 run.. Motor Trend tested an auto and consistantly and got 4.7 in a run to 60 with a 13.3 @ 105.6 mph 1/4 run My offer still stands <3

Another reason that I bought manual, because I would be really disturbed if 2009 1 comes with an variant of M-DCT, which apparently is working its way into the 2009 3 series.

"With the Evo IX MR, we saw 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds at 104 mph, the fleetest sprinting we've garnered from any stock Evo. " http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...t_drive_review (Compared to the 135i) I don't understand how less horsepower, less torque, and awd (all at a higher RPM) can make a 12.9 to 13.0 stock?? I'm not sure even with shorter gearing that it could muscle that..

Today's auto tranny's are pretty damn good... I don't care if the auto runs .1 seconds faster then the manual.. for me it is about feel... There is no comparison for me when it comes to auto and manual... I have driven many automatics and many manuals.. no matter how great the auto is it is not the same as a manual for feel and being directly connected to the vehicle... this goes for a vehicle with 100 hp as well as a vehicle with 300 hp...

That being said, car and driver cut a 4.7 0-60 with the MT and road and track got a 4.8 with the MT. The stick shift is not for drag racing, it's for fun. To me, it just feels a lot better (more control, more feel, more fun) than an auto in almost every driving situation (including sitting in traffic). I like to drive the car rather than just steer. Also, in the motortred article, the evo kills it on the road track b/c the evo has a really smart dsg computer program driving the transmission and S-awc doing almost everything else - distributing torque, braking etc. The bmw auto is just not competitive here. I'd be willing to bet the results would have been diffirent with a manual 135.
