Snow Fun in a 135i
Actually, not that fun at all driving a rear wheel drive on tyres with no grip and 300+BHP at the back! Would like to have a go with chains on though - that would be fun. For non UK folk, we've had a couple of inches of snow today which as always has sent the country into shutdown mode

snow!!!
m8, quite how mine did not get wrapped round a tree or a lamp post last night i have absolutely no idea.
this car is completely useless in the snow. my fault for maybe for the spec but imo: rear wheel + auto box + Traction control + dodgy rft tyres = a car that does not work in the snow.. i got stuck for 30 mins on the M25 last night whilst being past by various corsa's and clio's etc etc... and we only got out of the hole as the dear wife (giggle) managed to push me out of the hole.. unfortunately i couldn't stop to pick her back up again!!! i then got stuck again on a local lane just by my house and after got the doris to push me out again (my heroin!!), ended up going the full length of the 1 1/2 car width road on complete opposite lock and totally sideways, missing every tree and lamp post by what seemed to be millimetres, whilst bouncing in and out of bushes and kerbs.. don't get me wrong, i love my car, and i was basically pooing myself all night in case i bent it.. but these guys that drive a 1er in snowy places.. hats off don't know how you do it! 1er's are poo in the snow. 135 with my drivetrain spec, no way! i just hope when the snow melts i have no damage, but i really am not sure. i will point out we have had about 40cm here.. and still coming! |

Sorry to hear you guys are struggling over there, though with OEM RFT Summer tires I'm not surprised. They become 3,400lb 300torque rear-drive snow sleds.
Glad to hear you and your super-wife are unharmed. Hope the same goes for your other love. With snow tires, I find mine to be better than my wife's all-seasoned FWD Jetta. We also only have one plow in DC Metro area, so a few inches shuts us down. Happy shoveling fellas. |

I only have the 135 to drive. It has been...............fun ) I have managed to test the ABS to see how it feels through the pedal and also played with the traction control.....did you know you can do 10MPH at full throttle in 1st gear with no wheel no wheel spin ;o) Also, how easy is it to get some oversteer and do donuts in empty carparks. I'm having great fun. I have also driven to and from work very gently and had no near misses at all and full control, whilst others around me have slid off the road and bumped curbs etc. Drive with a feather touch on the gas and take care with speed and braking distance and it as safe as any other 2 wheel drive car on the road.

Left mine in the garage, only cleaned it on Sunday, buggered if I want to clean all that slush and crap that builds up after driving in the snow...

Know the feeling too well. All that effort into getting it clean for nothing. I use my Mrs Ford Ka for the local trips, funny thing is it seems to repel muck as it allways looks clean!!!

Left mine in the garage...
Wish I had....! As Si-135i says, really enjoyed mine in all the snow. Been all over the place, no probs at all. Also interesting to play around with all the electronic aids.

I must say with the cold, wet weather I am missing good traction now. I'm bored with the current conditions and crave being pushed into the seat as the engine races to the red line in each gear. Was fun at first, but now it's just a pain...........roll on spring

That was Monday morning. Not so bad now.
...pushed into the seat as the engine races to the red line in each gear... Don't quite have that to look forward to, being a diesel However, found the diesel's torque is quite useful on the snowy side roads. Just stick it in second and it'll crawl along all on its own.

Ok i'm gonna that promational guy and I hate it. But my Pirelli 240s in 18'' made the greatest difference to my 135i in the winter. I've driven it through unplowed snow and it handled quite well. Although I don't recommend it because the snow clogged up the lower intakes on the car. Good thing it was cold and I didn't need the brake cooling.
