I googled quite a bit last night trying to answer this question...has another car used the same TDO3? I came away with the understanding that the a lot of people dont know anything about it.
Thought it might be better to ask the obvious question...has this turbo been pushed in another application before ours.

![]() I think the lesson is: Don't expect to push your car hard with the V3 or JB3 and expect it to last forever...8.8 psi to 16-18psi is going to cause wear a lot faster. |

that's a sweet video. too bad Toyotas don't do squat for me. even if they're popular with the ricer crowds. lol
so while we're at it, here's one of my favorite GN videos. You know you've got some serious HP when you smoke the tires on a dyno run. ![]()

I could say nobody cares about a red 135i owners opinion with stupid looking front windshield tint, and ricey CF parts bolted on it, But why be an asshole? Adding to the post on subject, I think everyone is worried about turbo failure at high PSI. I am addressing this with upgraded turbos that will allow me not only to make more HP, but be more reliable as well.

i completely agree with your supra post above this one, but to stay on topic, that is what i'm talking about; larger turbos for not only more power, but to be able to run more boost without these turbo-whine problems. its seems pretty obvious BMW made the turbos small for a reason; to maximize usable torque throughout the powerband. however, they're too small to increase the boost >15psi without having failures. we need AMS' turbo kit (or another company), plain and simple.

![]() you guys need to get a life and don't get so offended just because I don't care about Japanese cars. I could understand if you had posted a picture of your wife and I said something bad about the way she looks. but come on, we're talking about freakin' cars on a car forum. so you don't like Crimson Red 135i cars? okay, so what... that doesn't mean I'm gonna start calling you a douche bag. I'm too old for that type of behavior. good Lord....... it'd be one thing had I went to a Supra specific forum and start bad mouthing those cars but I didn't. I'm expressing my opinion about a Japanese sports car on a BMW chat forum. and for that, I get hailed on by a few little babies that need their diapers changed. again, get a life.......

actually if you think about it, how much more boost do we need on a stock engine? sooner or later something's gonna break if the wicks keep getting turned up on our cars.

no all i'm saying is run a larger turbocharger(s) at the same psi thats being run right now with JB3 etc. (around 15ish?). it will generate more power and won't be running at its limit, therefore making it last longer.

The stock engine boost 6-8lbs. The jb3 boost 13-14 on the high boost maps (excluding the race map which is 14-16) |

Most cars that are turbo'd like the 135i and more notoriously, the Evo, come very rich from the factory to protect the motor, but more-so to meet specific marketing criteria for a horsepower rating. If you lean out the mixture and add a few more pounds of boost, its not gonna kill the motor. I'm at nearly 52,000 miles on my tuned '06 Evo and I beat the snot out of it on a daily basis...no motor or turbo problems whatsoever *knocks on wood*. If anything, the clutch and/or tranny go before the motor.

Characteristically though, 23lbs is pretty common for an Evo and 21lbs is stock. Its not uncommon at all for people to run up to 30psi on the stock block. Up to about 25lbs or so without some sort of Meth/Water injection. But, like I said, most of the time its the driveline that suffers the consequences of the increased boost, not the motor. Its not like you are increasing boost to a motor that was engineered to be n/a. It was built for boost, so don't be afraid to run a few more pounds - just be sure that you are adding enough fuel (that is where the tune comes in) and you'll be fine.

the N54 has something like 10:1 compression ratio on top of being assisted by the twin turbos. I still have a hard time understanding how can an engine that comes stock with such high compression can withstand having even more stress when the boost kicks in. I'd be curious to see how high the compression levels are once the engine goes in to full boost. so I have to give it to the Germans. they obviously know what they're doing and they do it extremely well.

Oh, and the compression ratio of a motor doesn't change. Compression ratio is the difference in cylinder volume between when a piston is at the bottom of its stroke to when it is at its highest.

Holy crap, I didn't realize that stock boost was only 8.8 psi. Increasing boost by 10psi is pretty ridiculous on stock turbos - especially with how small they are. I personally wouldn't want to increase it more than 6psi over stock.
