Brake Pads Worn @ 6,100 Miles???
So I am out of town getting laser eyes surgery and I go to start the car up today and I get a service indicator with the car on a lift and the "BRAKE" indicator stays on even while driving. I looked it up in the manual and it says the brake pads are worn.... with only 6,100 miles on the car.
Has anyone else ran into this issue? |

Having a little trouble deciphering your message there but I will give it a try:
You have not heard of anyone else having this problem and that the warranty should cover it. |

Lol... good play on words. The thing is I do not brake hard at all. I engine brake a lot and I haven't even been on any canyon runs yet. I hope it is just a faulty wear sensor. If not, I have no idea why the pads are worn already.

Yeah, I am really hoping it is just the faulty sensor. I am house bound right now because of the eye surgery and then I have to drive home 650 miles through the mountains. Oh well, if shit happens I will just e-brake the hell of it and take it straight to the dealer still smoking.

I thought that at first and played with the e-brake. There is no tension on the handle until you lift it up a bit. So I thought maybe the cable seized so I yanked/released it quite a few times and still the same problem. The manual is clear about what the problem is with the lights currently on.
I would take it to the dealer but I cannot drive starting Monday since that is when my surgery is scheduled. Add to that I am on a military base so the dealer cannot come and get it. So basically to the left is a rock, to the right is a hard place and guess what; I am in the middle. |

I would doubt the car is dangerous to drive at the moment. When your eyes are cleared for surgery ( I could drive the day after my Lasiks), assuming you are feeling well, take it in to the dealer to diagnose the issue, and clear that code up.
A faulty ebrake can have caused some excessive wear. Or as you say, just a faulty sensor.

I am not getting Lasik, I am getting PRK as I do not want them to cut my cornea. This requires longer healing time because they actually remove the epithelial layer from the cornea to re-shape it. The longer down time is for them to grow back again. |

If it helps, my ebrake sensor was a little odd a while back... I'd put it down, it'd disengage, and the "BRAKE" light would still be on. I played with it a bit, making sure that I fully disengage the ebrake each time I drive, and I haven't had any trouble since then.

Brake Pad replacement Service Indicator
Hi Madman77!
I just had the exact same thing happen on my 135i. I have just under 17,000 km on my car (approx 10,560 miles). I also don't brake hard and think it must be a faulty sensor. All other vehicles I have owned haven't needed pad replacements below 30,000 km intervals. Your last post was mid-April. What was the outcome for you? I have a service appointment scheduled for this coming Thursday. |

They said that the ECU mis-calculated the wear on the brake pads and thought they were worn. Apparently it calculates it by mileage, speed, rate of deceleration and a few other factors. The shop foreman at my dealer said his 335i threw the same codes a couple weeks before mine.
I was told the fix was that they pulled the brake pads, measures their thickness and entered it manually into the ECU. |

Nope.
That is a common mis-conception that everyone in the Air Force is a fighter pilot. That would be like me saying to you that all navy men are effeminate guys in cracker-jack suits... |
