I don't know if your car come with an external amp. But what do you get for $3300? I assume front speakers Focal 100KRS? RRP 600 odd dollars? I got mine for under $500, 20% off retail. Two ARC mini amps with RRP close to $2000? 2 underseat Audiosystem woofers, $500RRP? So add installation, that becomes $3300? I did say they are expensive. You can just use one 4 channel amp to run the front speakers and underseat woofers, and leave the rear speakers as stock. That will save you quite a bit of money. You can get earthquake SWS woofers which come in 2ohm, and get more power out of some amps. Might be worhwhile trying Northfield Nundah and see if they are more competitive with their prices. The guy sorted out my problem, and seems to know his way around BMW, even though he hasn't done a 1 series before. |

Yeah that is a big RIP! You must be getting some sweet amps for that price.
I went to Moorooka today, but Drew had the weekend off so left and will return another day. If you break down the costs... Install front speakers - $120 Install one amp - $120 Cable kit and line level converter - $200 So out of that $3300, that means the amps were around $2200? Absolute rip off.... I would recomend just getting; New speakers - ~$550 4 Channel amp - ~$600 Installation costs - ~$450 - $500 if hooking up subs So really you should get a system better than the 10 speaker hifi for under $2k. If you want to save some money and stick with Alpine, go to see George at Gold Coast Car Sound at Slacks Creek, (not the gold coast). Tell him Richard sent you. He will also be able to fit 5" speakers in there instead of the 4" which Northfield will do. They will be much cheaper as you can haggle with him for a better deal. |

If you just want a bit better sound, and not after a lot of bass, then do what BBK suggested. I think $300-400 for front speakers, 4 channel amp $400-600, no need for LOC if the amp accepts speaker level input, plus installation including cabling should not be more than $1500. I also think that unless you are an audiophile, the you can't really tell the difference insound quality between an expensive and a lower level amp, if they both produce the same power. The alpine PDX does have it's attraction with being small enough to fit under the boot cover. However, it doesn't accept speaker level input so needs a LOC.

You guys in Aussie really do get stung with BMW accessories!!!! My Alpine kit cost me £250 and I had a local Car Audio installer to install it for another £85 so that's £335 installed ($570 Aus) I can see why you don't say it's good value for money in Austrailia!

You guys in Aussie really do get stung with BMW accessories!!!! QUOTE] It is not the only thing we get stung with. The socialist mentality of a large proportion of the population means inefficiency and high labour cost (there is no way that we would be able to get it installed here for 85 quid). So, everyone pays at the end. |

I shopped all over the world (well a fair part of it) before finding out Kuala Lumpur was just about the cheapest place to buy a Tag. You'll get the best deal from the official TAG shops there too. I got mine for about half the price they wanted in Oz.

I happen to work with a guy who loves his watches. He brought a Lewis Hamilton ed Carrera for 600GBP in a UK official Tag shop. That is just under AUD$1200. I think the RRP here is $4100. In Hong Kong they are not very cheap, getting 80% from RRP (RRP in Hong Kong say a Carrera is AUD$3.5K and here is $4K) in dealers and 85% from the official shop, but still cheaper than Australia. I think it works out about 33% off. Still love shopping overseas

I can confirm that KL is pretty much as cheap as you'll find watches anywhere in the world. My Omega SMP was about $500 cheaper than in Australia.
Sorry for the hijack.

I certainly know of at least one person who flew to KL to buy his Omega after working out that, even with the flights and accommodation factored in, he saved a lot on the best price he could get in Oz. Sorry for the hijack again...

Sorry for continuing the hijack, but anybody who's interested in watches should buy second hand not new. The prices are way below even the cheapest new retail price anywhere in the world and provided that you check references, it's generally reliable and in many cases the watches are indistinguishable from new.

Sweet... I'm stopping over in KL on my way to Cheng Du next year, maybe I can pick up that new Seiko I like for a reasonable price (I've had my current Kinetic for 12 years this month and it never misses a beat!)

I checked there but eventually bought from the Tag store on the ground floor of Times Square shopping centre. There's a Monorail stop just outside. I think they haggled down to 35% off their listed price without much pushing.

When I looked into the model number for those 4" Alpine splits, I was asked why would I bother with the 4" and not go the 5.25" ... If there is definately room for the 5.25" then I'd be going for those instead!! |
