1er w/stand tires to VT?
Hey,
Anyone out there drove their 1 with the standard Run Flats in the snow? Thinking of heading up to Vermont to ski, roads are a little slippery, really wanna take the 1 but wondering if its not a wise choice. How bad is the 1er in the snow or on slippery roads with standard RFT's? You think Ill make it? Help, I dont wanna drive my van! What should I do? |

summer tires should not be driven in temps below 40F. They get very hard as temps fall and will be very skittish even in dry weather around the freezing mark. If there is snow on the ground you would have to be nuts go there with summer tires.

Always can count on you BV! Just spoke with Goodyear and yes its a non SP w/ the GY LS2 RFT. I am told they ARE all season tires and should be ok as long as Im not plowing thru 5" of snow. Gonna go for it! |

I took my 135i with the stock Brigstone RE-50’s to a large empty parking lot a few miles for my house when it snowed one day last year to let the girls get used to a car sliding. It was extremely slippery. I would not dare drive it on snow any distance. You are asking for trouble. I do drive the car on dry days in the winter and it is very slippery even on dry pavement when the temperature is below 40 deg. F.
I put winter only tires on my 4x4 Tacoma since I feel buying $500 worth of tires is better than paying $500 deductible and the hassles of getting a car body damage fixed. Plus the increase in insurance rates if I did hit someone. Even if you’re on a budget you can find used winter tires on craigslist or e-bay for fairly cheap.

Usually, if you have a truck I recommend Michelin LTX All Season tires. They are $250 a tire, so a bit steep, but it is well worth it, the truck handles in every season and I have taken it through 3 ft of snow with no traction issues.
My truck is an '00 Merc Mountaineer V8 H/O and it has no assists except for ABS. |

Hey Update!!
Made it to Killington Vt.! BUT was not what expected. b4 I left I checked road cams, etc. and all looked like roads would be dry and snow free! Shoot, was I wrong! As soon as I hit Vt. boarder I hit what I thougth would only be flurries. Well, wouldnt you know it before long it started "dumping". I was sorta not really too worried because I could still see the road and lines. Then the road became totally snow covered, with 40 mph winds blowing. ..no more lines, up hills, totally snow covered highways. The fact that I am writing this is a testiment to how freeken awesome the 1 was in the conditions I experianced! At times, I thought...oh sh*t, she's gonna lose all traction and im gonna be toast, but she was downright respectfull in the Vt. winter. All the roads here are snow covered and icy and the 1 is so far 10x better than I would of expected!! Oh yeah on the way, some of the roads got totally dry, started playing, and rounded a curve.. FUUUUUKKKK, two freeken deer in middle of road !!n im doing 50mph heading right for them! (deer in headlights for real!)....eyes glowing n everything. I just started flasing my brights and honking the horn and they bolted with about 20 feet to spare Anyway gonna post some pics of my vert in the snow, and im thinking she might b back here again. Time to get some first season turns in tomorrow. Thanks for all the advise and the all season RF aint too bad, just keep the torque down. I think the 50-50 weight d helps with winter conditions...it aint an xi but much better than my MG or Fiero. Also would blow away any car that has no weight in the rear....vette, camaro, mustang, etc.. Im not taking it out in a snow storm but no prob in basic winter conditons. ...but now i really want 135 XI !!!!!! Last edited by Midgad; 12-10-2009 at 11:00 PM.. |
