The Definitive BMW M1 naming poll
Should BMW call this car an M1? I happen to be in the camp that believes they absolutely will. Just look at the buzz that has occurred from news that they would even think about doing something like that. You have enthusiasts swearing up and down that it wont happen. You also have many saying BMW has to realize they need more uniformity in terms of marketing the M's. I'm not asking if they will. I'm asking if they should. Geneva is in the beginning of March. We shall know in no time!
Let us put our votes where our mouth is. **Keep it non-personal and constructive to save the moderation team from deleting trash.

I'd be willing to bet that of all of the current BMW drivers (not even counting prospective BMW buyers), less than 1% know what the original M1 was. We are the fringe.
Just use the M1 moniker. Sure there was a pretty cool car in the 70's with that moniker, but so what? To call it anything else would just create a glaring inconsistency in their marketplace. 'M' means money these days. Specifically, BMW gets extra cash for naming it an M1 versus some other inconsistent and confusing name. .. or we could call it 'Jesus'. Just pointing out that those two letters, in combination, are not sacred. |

as long as we can retrofit the sweet M parts to our soon-to-be-lowly regular 1s, call the new car whatever you want!

I guess most people are fine with the M1 name. We all just thought BMW isn't going to use it. However, it makes much more marketing sense to use M1

M1 is the only thing that makes sense.
If they want to build another supercar, they can call it an M10, or M80, or whatever, but an M version of a 1 Series should be called an M1, just like the 3 and 5 Series. BMW's naming system is already screwed up to the point where it's becoming the butt of jokes in the automotive community (Xdrive 35is M anyone?) and I hate to see them take something that should be so simple, and screw it up in order to prevent reusing the name of a car that has seen production in two decades. |

It seems to me that BMW has gone to very niche models with even number series. I think the planned two series is going to be a Z car.

I think naming a car after its predecessor is ok as long as the car performs in the same respect for its time as its predecessor. The meaning and essence of the car must remain the same, looks dont hurt either. So I am all for it, just be consistent.
Not like the GTO.

Thinking of it, BMW would have some troubles either way. Assuming they build a real supercar and name it M1, just in line with the great anchestor of the 70s, some people would still wonder how this car is related to the 1 series. So they might indeed prefer a higher numbered naming like M9 for a supercar and accept the dismay of some (like myself) for naming the 1 series M1.
Best regards, south

The joke of it is BMW seriously considered called the the 1er the 2 series for the US market. So it almost happened.

The chances of them making a production supercar in the next 10 years is probably incredibly slim anyway. It simply costs too much, especially on the heels of a bum economy. I'll reiterate that a 40-50 year hiatus means that only a handful of average consumers will even know what the original M1 was anyway. |

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that the car will be called M1, guaranteed. Marketing is the winner, not old heritage anymore for BMW. Unfortunately, anyone that doesn't like that will just have to buy an Audi...

GTO is an abbreviation for a type of car, not just a name, just like GT is. How many manufacturers have used that over the years? It's not really the same thing. |

The fact that some dealer (which seems to be focused on rare and exclusive cars to me) offers three or four of them, doesn't make it less of a car. Just have a look at the prices they call for it. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for an M 1 series and I might even consider an M E88 convertible, but the name would have to be different in my opinion. Best regards, south

Yes, but it was a model named for what it was, a race car that had been legalized for road use. It's just an abbreviation of the Italian words for it, same as GT. Besides, all that has nothing to do with the M1. BMW ownes the rights to to the name, and can do whatever they like with it, which in this case would seem to be sticking it on the back of a 1 Series with some fat tires on it. |

Does everybody forget that the M1 was as much a lamborghini as it was a BMW? One can argue that the Audi R8 is an M1 sucessor, as it is a combination of Lamborghini and a German manufacturer. Im just saying that any number of things can be agrued and that you can go in circles for hours with just these debates and until BMW actually announces the car than we are just wasting bandwidth with our words. And the fact of the matter is that I and many other people will buy this car, no matter what it is named. And the E82 vert is the E88. |
