The long cranks have started.
I am not pissed or anything, I knew it was a matter of time.
Car has about 11.5k miles and started long cranking a couple days ago. About a 3 second crank, only happened once but I know what to expect. 943 here I come. ![]()

I had my first longer than normal crank last night, but it's kinda cold (raining), since my last pump replacement(which is then 2nd replacement I've got already). if it IS failing, this one lasted about the same as the last pump, ~1000miles. sigh...
This morning, it's fine... so I don't know what to make of it... yet... Maybe it's just the cold weather, or maybe it's dying.... |

I've had the long crank, consistently (3-5 sec) for several months now. My dealer won't replace until I throw a code. My question is if I am losing any power as this problem slowly progresses? Anyone?

Just had mine in for its first (annual) service (10.5k miles) and mentioned the same trouble - intermittent long cranks, turbo lag, sluggishness - it comes and goes, cold or warm engine. They said the couldn't reproduce it and I haven't thrown any codes so they won't do anything until the HPFP goes out or I throw a code.

Someone needs to invent a "tune" that when plugged in to the OBDII port will insert the correct error code into the system to allow the pump swap.
That way when people starting experiencing long cranks they can get it taken care of rather than be on pins and needles when 2,000 miles from home that their pump might fail. |

My 09 135i started to have longer crank times around 10,000 kms. I didn't really worry about it until last week when it shuddered when it started. I called my local dealer and got an appt the next week.
This is what I got: COMPLAINT: PLEASE CHECK & ADVISE REASON THAT CRANK TIME ON START UP IS TAKING BETWEEN 5-6 SECONDS IN THE COLD WEATHER. CUSTOMER HAS NOTICED THAT IT IS TAKING LONGER TO START CORRECTION: C/O DIAGNOSTIC TEST, SEVERAL FAULT CODES STORED REGARDING MISFIRES. 1 FAULT FOR FUEL PRESSURE. FOLLOWED TEST PLAN. CHECKED PUMA, REF MEASURE 7762832-08 REPLACE FUEL PUMP AND PROGRAM VEHICLE. REPLACED HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. PROGRAMMED VEHICLE. No grief, no problems - the car was dropped off at 7 and ready by 3 that afternoon. I can't complain about that. It seems that different dealer handle things differently. That's not so good for BMW since you can really get ticked off by a dealership telling you you have to wait until your car leaves you on the side of the road until you can get a known faulty part replaced. |

It doesnt always long crank, but I am worried that I may have power loss because of it.
I want to chip it soon so I hope that doesnt make it worse. ![]()

Can you take it in? I'd do it instead of waiting for it to die.

I have noticed that when my long cranks start, i use either my Dash Daq or my Bav tool to clear all codes and/or refresh the DME and the long cranks go short again, for 30-90 days, then do it again. I'm on my 3rd HPFP and have been doin this little trick for about 7-8 months or since i put my 3rd pump in.
If you have a tool or know someone that does, give this a shot, before you start pullin your hair out. It's gotten me this far without having to go to a 4th pump. If you dont know anyone with the tool, go to your local Advance Auto Parts or simular and borrow their diagnostics tool: Click "Read Codes" whether codes come up or not, usually you can choose "clear all codes" and it resets your DME. Hope this helps and please let us know how you make out if you do try this. I might just have a weirdo... |

I've been having some longer than usual cranks for the past 2-3 months, but it hasn't died on me yet. I rationalize the long cranks by blaming it on the cold weather.

I started to get longer cranks when it got colder in the fall. Not too long just a second or two rather than the immediate startup. But, the other night after leaving the car outside for a few hours I came back and got rough start and then limp mode. Went to get gas in limp mode and re-started and it was cleared. Happened again on Saturday and it was also cleared by re-starting. It's going in on Thursday so we'll see what happens.

I was having long cranks (again) and so I listed that on my service sheet when I dropped the car off for scheduled maintenance yesterday morning.
I already had the HPFP replaced 6 months ago. Now the service dept just called me and they're replacing the crank position sensor! Not sure if they're also doing the HPFP again. Anyway it looks like I won't get my car back until tomorrow.
