Inexpensive 17" wheel option for track
I'm looking for some hpde/autox wheels, but don't want to spent the $$ on something like SSR's and the like. I was thinking the best bet would be some used oem 17's from an e36 m3 or e46 3 series. Are the offsets compatible with the 1 series? anyone using a similar setup?
edit: just found this http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/?felge=2690 does the calculator on the left of the page show what wheels will fit when you fill in the parameters (like 17x8)? I don't speak German, lol! Last edited by wkndracr; 01-31-2010 at 10:44 PM.. |

Anyone has expiriense tracking 17 inch D-Force LTW weels? I like the fact that they are very light, about 16 pounds, but will they clear StopTech BBK?

The Nitto/Total 135i guys race on that sized wheel with 255/40/17's all around, but they did a lot of work to the back. It's much more reasonable to run that size with a 235/40/17 or 245/40/17 and some camber plates up front. basically anything above 225 for track or autocross is going to need camber plates up front to fit properly with an extreme summer tire or r-compound |

17" won't clear. I had them and had to move to 18" ARC 8s when I installed a StopTech BBK.
The 17" APEX ARC 8s could clear...maybe. We did I test when I picked them up at APEX and it looked like they did. I had already purchased the 18" tires so I went with the 18s. Call Eddy at APEX. Great wheels. Great knowledge and great service. |

OK jbass. I really like d-force weels in 17 inch, but looks like 18'' ARC APEX is going to be an answer if i want BBK. Plus i can fit wider rubber in the back.

I think APEX has a 135 fitment. Just to be fair, the 18" LTWs work also but I dont' think they have a 135 fitment.

I ran D-Force LTW-5's on my 135i, and the offset limited me to only 245s in back (and front, with rolling and camber and 5mm spacer).
Running APEX wheels now with 255F/275R, due to the better offsets offered. The 275's will fit on any 1er with no modifications at all, but the fronts will need camber and rolling to get 255's up there. Best part is not having to use spacers at all... |

Iam going to pull strut pins and install m3 parts to gain some negative camber. I will install camber plates too if i have to. After reading your post i am definatly going with Apex 18'' weels. |

You'll need something similar too for 245s. |

245/35/18 with camber plates up front and then a 265/35/18 or 275/35/18 fits in the rear with ease. Camber plates are a must basically.
The wheels are only a little more expensive then 17's, but you gain HUGE amounts of front and rear grip. |

Ok. I got it now. Looks like camber plates will be necessary for anything wider than 235''F street tires. I believe R-compound tires are slightly wider in the same size.

It's one of the reasons the ARC-8 was developed in 18x9.5" with a 62mm offset (what the 1 series really needs in the rear). On the em-power you can't fit more then a 255/35, while the ARC-8 can handle a 275, and no other wheel on the market can do that right now until they start to copy their offset. |

There are countless 8.5" wheels with those similar specs, and yes 235 is the max with offsets sub 40. |

What do you guys think of the 17 inch Sparco Pista? Looking for a nice economical set of AutoX wheels.
