Isn't that a vacuum leak if you leave the OEM hose (the one with the yellow stripe) unplugged. It's a vacuum signal that actuates the flapper after all right?

how is this different from removing the hose from the bottom of the car?

I've tucked my hose behind a metal panel with no zip ties or anything. I checked it a few days ago and to my surprise it's still in place.

I believe both methods of keeping the flap open all the time are functionally the same. I did the "under the car" method on my 128i and I strongly suspect this method is applicable to a 128i too.

This is nice and neat and keeps things in the trunk in a protected area. If you do it underneith, like I did, you want to be careful what you use (I agree a wooden golf tee is not ideal) and be neat about it. I have nothing dangling down where it is visible unless you get under the car. I also plugged both the hose and the inlet to the valve so I don't get junk in either. But getting stuff into the valve or hose is a lot less likely if you do this in the trunk under the lining.

I used a sound pressure meter to record before and after dB - sound level. There is definite difference on a cold motor. But as the engine warms up, the difference becomes much less to where there is little difference including at higher rpm. I left it in place but may undo it at some point. That is easier from underneith.

So the whole idea behind this is to stop the hose with the yellow stripe from allowing air to get through? Seems like we can just clamp it like the guy who did so in the picture on page 1. Maybe not with such a big clamp, but rather a solid zip tie to "choke" the hose that we want to plug.

Anyone think people are over complicating this orrrr, am I missing the whole idea behind this mod?

quick question, i have an aftermarket muffler (dont know the brand, came on the car) but it has exhaust coming out of both pipes at idle. does this mean i dont have to do the golf tee mod?

If you have an aftermarket muffler, you don't have the flap.... You won't have anything to change.

This is what I did, as well as lots of other people. Does the same thing. Forgot to remove it when taking it to the dealer for service and they didn't even mention it.

took the left trunk quarter panel off the other day to install a fire extinguisher and I realize when I saw the corner that this was the area this DIY was mentioning so broke open the laptop, confirmed your steps, blocked the line and viola...deeper sounding exhaust...a bit more drone though at 40-50 mph but definitely throaty and nice sounding.

Just did the mod by pulling the rear quarter panel and unplugging the actuator. The flapper in the muffler was totally driving me crazy. I can hear it opening and closing whenever I depressed the throttle. With this mod, I no longer hear it.

What about when we get an aftermarket exhaust? What happens to the stock hose?

I have the BMW Performance exhaust, and when I looked under my car, it looks like BMW caps off the hose by default. Performance exhaust must not have the flap.
