"A Full Version can be extended to Battery Registration by In-App purchase. Battery Registration contains an unlimited license to register and change batteries. Future updates are included."
Unfortunately, but understandably, they nickel and dime for added functionality. |

I look at as a deal and a half since I won't have to deal with my local dealership to change a battery. Which on my two BMW's that I plan to keep a long time adds up to hundreds of dollars.

If you paid for the battery registration option and it won't work on your car, contact them via "Support". They've been very responsive with me. The E8x series is supposed to be fully supported; I've had no functionality issues with our 2011 E88 128i.

I paid for the battery registration because I assumed it would work I guess. My fault there.
I'm currently in contact with support and they are looking into the problem because they said it should work. |

There is a guy on the forum who can sell you a Nav upgrade for ~$50. These are installed, for later cars, via USB key(s) through a port found in the glove box, after one downloads the files from a link supplied by this seller. I performed this update on a 2013 135i last week. The current version is 2016 version 1. You can reach the seller, Steven, at this email address: baccus@alpinemss.com |

Call me spoiled for wanting things I get for free from Waze or Googlemaps
I'm still in the investigation phase of how one can code things on the BMW platform to which I'm very new. Seems like Carly's niche is pre-baked car tweaks that is very straightforward and user friendly. All of the coding is almost completely abstracted from the end-user at the cost of only being able to perform "canned" changes. Do I capture this correctly? On the flip side - is there anything really special on the Carly HW dongle (BT or WiFi) that prevents folks from using it with applications like NCSExpert or any of the BMW tools that rely on a presence of a serial port as a gateway into ODB2/DCAN interface? Of course, pretty much any built-in Nav system has been a dinosaur, VW finally got it right by allowing you to connect into your phone's much more flexible (and up to date) capability. Wave of the (near) future IMHO, lol.

Yup yup. What I had in mind is actually the other way around - using Carly HW dongle with other programs to perform coding. I have a lot more faith in Carly as an organization to perform QA vs some no-name shop that sells a knock-off One-Stop-Electronics cable harness. I wonder if anyone has done that, trying to avoid spending another $100 on yet another cable to do programming outside of what Carly is supporting. Quote:

I am wondering if the battery coding is just not available on N55 cars and is only currently activated for N54 cars.

I am in central Virginia, have the newest carly dongle and would be happy to put it in your car if you have the software to test it out.
Not going to travel too far but depends on where you are. LMK

I'm fairly sure that NCSExpert or E-Sys are not going to work with the BT OBDII adapter, as they require a cable-type connection. I know this because I have used both to code both E8x, E9x, and F30 cars (F30 requires E-Sys). NCSExpert, unless it's substantially changed in the last year or two, doesn't have a BT connection capability, nor does E-Sys. Nonetheless, I've also used Carly with a cable on a 2004 645i to check codes and code a couple features. On my wife's 2011 E88, I've used Carly to check and clear codes and change a number of module settings; on my F30, it can currently only read/clear codes and monitor "parameters" (such as RPM, oil temp, coolant temp, etc.). Supposedly, they will have F30 coding coming out this 1st Quarter of 2016.
No matter what software you use to code, it's the same principle: connect to car's ECUs, select and read a module's data, modify the data to turn features on or off or change values, then push data back into individual module. With E-Sys and NCSExpert, you do each of those steps manually, although they do allow you to search for the module/section you specifically want to code. With Carly, you have a list of recognized ECUs and their contents (features), and in each one you have checkboxes or a field for values to fill in. The process is easier because you don't have to go hunting for the specific item in the module you want to code - they're all listed and you check a box to activate or uncheck to deactivate. Carly makes a backup file for whichever module you're coding, just as E-Sys and NCSExpert allow you to do. Also, everything in Carly is in English rather than German. Coding in NCSExpert and E-Sys requires a "cheat sheet" (readily available in this forum) so you can figure out what to look for in the data. Hope this hasn't been redundant for everyone reading this section, but figured it might be worth mentioning how this all works. It's off the topic of battery registration, but there's more to Carly and the other mentioned software than what's being discussed relative to that topic.

I bit the bullet and forked over $ to get me one of them Carly dongle things I'll let you guys know what the results are once I get a chance to play with it a bit.
If NCS Expert and the like are just looking for a serial port in order to be able to establish a connection to the car - Carly might work as long as whatever BluTooth stack on your PC is compatible. We'll see |
