Keep it above 4k. No drone, better throttle response. Problem solved.

I have a Magnaflow 16525 on the way. Like others here, I will be installing it on my back...haven't decided if I'll be deleting the secondaries at the same time, or not.

I just took off my performance exhaust and am waiting to put in the 135i muffler, so I got a very good, back to back comparison between:
Secondary cat delete + PE Exhaust Secondary cat delete + muffler delete The difference in tone and pitch is worlds apart. I’d say the volume between the two is basically the same, BUT the muffler delete is boomier with a lot more of the low frequency notes coming through. Puttering around town there’s definitely presence of exhaust but it’s droney/boomier. When you open it up wide open throttle it starts to sound nice above 4K. If you’re not WOT, it’s still a very low droney, boomy note. The PE is a similar volume, but it controls drone so well in comparison and the tone, the pitch, is all so well refined. There is low tones in there but it’s tight and defined. There’s a rumble below 3.5k that’s throaty, with very very minimal drone and everything above 3.5k is a proper racey, slightly raspy, higher pitched climb up to 7k. When you let off the throttle there’s some overrun burbles that happen very quickly. It’s not obnoxious at all and I’ve always loved ‘em. All these years using the PE and I’m still surprised at how good it sounds. I’m also surprised at how much of the drone is suppressed by the muffler on these cars. Old sound clip of the PE that I never posted here: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0sRt...rville_Trevose I’ll see if I can get a sound clip of the muffler delete later this weekend. BMW PE is such a wonderful sounding exhaust. How it should be factory. but I am sure not going to pass the sound tests.

I think another underrated feature of the PE exhaust is that it helps flow the air under the car along with the rear of the underbody panels. A lot of exhausts will cause parachuting in the bumper and cause turbulent air where the muffler box is missing.
Of course, at the opportunity cost of weight savings with other exhaust set ups. |

I've got a Vibrant 1792 on the way to replace my muffler delete. Will report back on how it turns out.

Just had my Vibrant 1792 installed. Initial impressions are that the sound is much smoother. Seems very close to the PE. No longer has as much growl/rasp. Volume is about the same, maybe a tad quieter. Drone seems to be worse now, but maybe the thing just needs to break in?

Should be good. I left resonator in and added a Berk Street axle back from a 135i. Sounds very good and not obnoxious.

Been through 3 axle-back setups now. Here's the rundown.
-Muffler delete - Obviously the loudest. Very raw, throaty sound with a bit of rasp. Lots of burbles and pops. Minor drone while cruising at certain loads in the 2.5k-2.8k range -Vibrant 1792 - Ever so slightly quieter than the MD. Incredibly smooth sound, and still had plenty of burbles. Drone was godawful though. This wasn't minor drone at certain RPMS under a specific amount of load, this was a horrid sound that was always present between 1.9k and 2.5k. Had to deal with it even during normal acceleration around town. Easily my favorite sound of the bunch, but it was awful to commute with. -Vibrant Ultra Quiet (just installed, potentially subject to change as it breaks in) - About 20-30% quieter than than 1792. Sound is definitely more muffled and isn't as "open" as the other two. Really tamed cold starts. You still get a nice punch on startup, but it doesn't annoy my roomates like the other two. Tone seems to be even deeper than the 1792 while keeping the very smooth sound. Burbles are still there, but not as noticeable as they are with the other two. Drone is basically non-existent. Very happy with it so far, seems to be the best option for a daily. Will likely go with a secondary delete if the sound doesn't increase a bit as it breaks in though. |

Bit of a pickle here. I have AA headers installed, and I recently took off my stock exhaust and put in the Active Autowerke 128i signature exhaust. Everything between the header and exhaust are still stock. I do like how it sounds, but it's really way too loud for me, especially with highway driving. Due to my car being automatic, it typically stays around 1800-2500RPM depending on my speed, it drones really bad. To the point of causing me headaches. What are my options for getting rid of the drone and keep that deep growling sounds while lowering the volume, ideally to the level of my stock exhaust?
Last resort would be welding my stock muffler back on, but guess I may potentially lose out on power since AA claims HP increase due to better airflow. |

Here's a vid comparing my initial muffler delete to the Vibrant Ultra Quiet I have now. Far from scientific but it gets 'er done.
Still very happy with the UQ. Much less drone and a smoother tone. Might go for a secondary delete though since the UQ doesn't burble like the MD. Last edited by Papa Popov; 11-10-2021 at 10:39 PM.. |

I had just the BMW PE and it sounded great. I added the AA headers, expecting a small increase in volume, but holy crap did it get loud and a bit raspy at high rpm. It sounds great on track, but it's a bit much on the road. I tried putting the stock muffler back on, but that was too tame.
My thought is to try a stock 135i muffler, adapted to the 128i. I'd like to get a good comparison of these 2 setups before I go through the effort to custom-adapt a 135i muffler. Any audio comparisons that anyone has would be appreciated. Here's my car on track. It doesn't sound loud due to the wind buffeting, but it's audible. Sounds appropriate in this environment, but it's a bit much for the road.

Guys, got have a question. I installed a 135i (n55) on my 130i and it sounds great, but I would like to get a little more of pops, but dont want to do the resonator delete because it is too much for me. So I was thinking on installing a 135i resonator, replacing the one on my 130i that has many more perforations inside than the one on a 135i. My question is, is it okay to do this? I ask because I almost sure that the pipe inside the resonator is a little bit wider that my original one. So the gasses would go from 2.5" to 2.75" (resonator) then again to 2.5". Mechanically would it be okay? I think that would be the sweet spot for me. Thanks for your answers.
