That's debatable: My previous BMWs never had the center armrest and I never thought I needed one on any long drives... Heck, I've never even used the cruise control on any of those cars.

I would like to point out that the author's money comparison cars (Prius and Taurus) are simply red herrings. Cars like a new(ish) Mustang (you remember the car that Motortrend ran to a virtual dead heat against an M3), the FR-S / BR-Z twins, and 370Z are far better comparisons for the kind of money and vehicle requirements we are talking about here.

I strongly advise getting the M Sport (previously, just Sport) package. As has been said in many other threads, it's worth it for the seats alone. I think the ride is plenty comfortable and I drive daily into Boston. In fact, now that the car has almost 60,000 miles, things have softened up too much and I will change to M3 front suspension, M3 rear subframe bushings and Koni FSD shocks. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm looking at a 128i w/sport and would be going from an '06 Cooper S.... is the ride substantially better? My wife hated riding in the MINI because of the ride.

It will be if you replace the runflat tires with non runflats and stick with 16" or 17" wheels.

The article's opening paragraph quote from BMW's M brand manager pretty much says it all. If you missed out on a 128i Sport Pack., 6MT you really missed something.

That Zagato coupe is nice, isn't it?
I must admit, though I AM a bit of a Luddite, I find some of the little touches I find in my 128i amusing. These features may be too familiar to many Bimmer drivers, but I find them fascinating! For example, the way the door lowers the side window half an inch when the door is opened, then raises it 1/2 inch the instant you close it, to get a better seal. Isn't that brilliant? And also the way the radio, when I change stations, fades the station I'm leaving out, then fades the new station in, all within about one second? Isn't that amazing? Do other luxury cars do things like these (I wouldn't know, my previous and now other car being a truck)? My 128i is a relative stripper, its only options being 18" wheels, Boston Oyster leather seats and metalic paint. Do fancier Bimmers have interesting features I know nothing about? I bought my 2013 128i MT6 "stripper," i.e. without any options at all apart from 18" wheels, leather seats and metalic paint, i.e. nothing to make it any more complicated than necessary. BMWs are (or can be) notoriously costly to keep, but it doesn't have to be that way, at least, not quite as much as if we get, and have to maintain, all the complicated electronics and other gear available. Sometimes I think BMW service departments must be where they make all their money! All I need is a motor, a gearshift and a place to sit (and a few other simple items), and I can have fun. And I can have MORE fun, if I know it's not eating too deeply into my bank account.

Got myself a 2011 128i 6MT non-sport. Upgraded to Msport suspension, Msport rear bumper, Performance side skirts, and Performance front bumper. I know everyone talks highly of Msport seats. Maybe one day I'll upgrade if someone's selling their seats, but the non-sport seats are still comfortable for me, and they're heated.

The turn signals can be programed to flash three times with just a slight 1/2 sec tip down/up. Or they car be switched to work normally like on other cars. IF you flash on the high beams when the cr is off... you can program how long you'd like them to stay on as to light up your driveway. It's all in the BC(board computer) menu... Rain sensor on the wipers is also cool. That's all I can remember for the moment. Dackel

I think the 2012 and 2013 128i with M-Sport, manual transmission, manual seats and sunroof delete is one of the last great cars BMW made. It was affordable, quick, sounds better than any turbo car they have built since with possibly the exception of the M2. Sadly, so few were ordered like that, but the 128i configured like this was the a great normally aspirated machine for the masses. I wish you could still get one. It was more reliable, lighter than the turbo models and had great throttle response.

118K Still likes it
My wife bought hers in 2011. A 2012 delivered in July 2011. She was able to still get it in Montego blue. We ditched the RF tires too after the second set. Much better ride and they last much longer too. Not had any big issues. Replaced the rubber gasket behind the oil filter mount. Replaced the coil packs, and of course the plugs. Finally needed front brake pads a few months ago.
Hers is a 6AT, sport, heated wheel & seats, xenons, black leather. She didn't want a sunroof. |

Production Numbers
I am in the market for a new (to me) car and a 128i is at the top of the list. The problem is I am looking for basically what this article recommends (manual, sport or m-sport package, no nav, no sunroof) and those are hard to find, plus they come with the 'enthusiast tax.' Does anyone have (or know where I can find) production numbers in this spec? It would be interesting to know just how big of a challenge it would be to find one like this.

I would use/look on www.autotempest.com which searches many sites to find you the car you are looking for. I would also keep an eye on the forums here. You might get lucky. Look here for cars... https://www.1addicts.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=268 There are two cars listed that might meet your needs/specs... https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1610670 https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1609214 I would also join the National BMW Car Club... BMWCCA... and look in their magazine for a car. Or better yet place and ad on line or in their magazine for the car of your dreams. Another option might be to look for a new BMW... say a used BMW 230i with a manual. You might have better luck with a slightly new-er car with the options you are looking for. Good Luck, Dackel

Thanks Dackel!
I'm about a year out from purchasing a car, but have started the search knowing it's going to be difficult to find what I'm looking for. I've tried AutoTempest, but thought it was a little hard to navigate. I've been searching this forum and CarGurus pretty regularly and check BMWCCA's website occasionally. I'm still just casually looking, but will get more serious at the beginning of next year and will probably put out a few WTB posts at that time. As far as the 2-series, I really want to stick with something that's naturally aspirated- just a personal preference- that's why a 128i is at the top of the list; I'm also considering an E46 330i, but that getting to be an 'old car' at this point. |

Just get on the automated search feature for all those.
Be ready to move fast and pay a little more than NADA. You can also automate a craiglist search with an RSS reader and the RSS craiglist feature....RSS logo in lower right corner of your CL search results will creat a RSS feed for ANYTHING that pops up. Mine showed up on autotrader and was so new there were no photos. I was the first there. Sales rep may have been BSing but he said "What is with this car?...we got like 10 phone calls already!" It was a local trade and while not full unicorn spec it is pretty close. Sunroof, power seats, sport, Manual. That's it... Very clean. Has some undertray damage but they are pretty fragile.
