I would be extremely cautious of using an unknown combination of adapter and coding program not known to work safely together.
I don't claim to understand how this all works, other than that it appears to be executing a flash on solid state memory modules, somewhat akin to updating the BIOS on a computer, which in that case is always done through a directly wired connection (from a file downloaded to the computer and then across internal wiring). Carly (or at least the dongle that I use) uses BT through radio waves, and obviously they have figured out how to do that safely (most of the time), although there are a number of reports of "bricked" firmware from using Carly to flash these chips. Taking some other software program, designed for a wired connection, and trying to use it to code through radio waves, is basically turning your car into a guinea pig. Hopefully it will work out, but if it doesn't you could do lots of damage that could be very expensive to get fixed. Just be careful. |

If all you are doing is reading the settings and faults present, probably nothing.
If you are coding, you could fry the chips and cause hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of damage that anyone other than a total geek could not fix for themselves and have to pay a dealer to replace. If you are a total geek and know how to solder connections and feel comfortable dealing with eeprom and similar chips, then probably you have little to fear. If you are a typical car owner, it might make you crap in your pants, the damage you could do. |

I've got one already, but I don't have Bluetooth on the laptop I use with E-Sys. Don't really want to load it up on my other one that does. I suppose it all depends on whether Bluetooth appears as a port that E-Sys can connect with. Reason I think it won't is that the cable I use for E-Sys is an ethernet cable, which is way different than the bluetooth cable that I've used in the past with both Carly and NCSExpert. NCSExpert, on the other hand, may recognize it. Bluetooth is a short-range type of WiFi, but I'm not sure what kind of port it represents itself as.
Regarding coding using Bluetooth, I've been using Carly and then Gen-1 and now Gen-2 to safely code for the past year. The ECU modules aren't "chips" (EPROMs), but are more like solid-state hard drives. There are safeguards in the Carly programming, and it will error out if it loses its connection or for some reason can't write to the module. It also makes a backup copy of the module's data in case of an error when pushing the modified data back in, and that can be easily restored. It doesn't take long to push the module data back into whichever one is being coded, unlike flashing the engine's ECU which takes over an hour. They do suggest you keep your engine idling to avoid a voltage drop if the battery gets drawn down too far - but that's more of a car-related issue than the communications method. I'm just waiting for the Android version of Carly that will allow coding on F-chassis cars; thus far, I've had to use E-Sys with an ethernet-to-OBDII cable

Best bet is to contact Carly and ask them the same questions.

Does anyone know what this error is? I have cleared it a couple of times but it comes back. Car drives fine so not all that concerned but I'd like to know what it is related to.

My n54 in my 535 wagon has a minor misfire at cold start up. I've done coils, plugs, and carbon cleaning. There are no codes being thrown. What monitor codes would i select to see what cylinders are misfiring in real time?

Are your halo ring illuminators still halogen bulbs? Until you replace the illuminators with LED units (like LUX offers), or use 8500K halogen bulbs (which don't last very long), they'll always be the same color (probably in the 3000K range).

Back to the regularly scheduled program. My Windows 10 machine detected and installed Carly V2 BT dongle (pass: "1234" I believe). As customary with most generic BT I/O devices it installed two serial (COM) ports - incoming and outgoing (SPP). Truth be told I'm not surprised considering Carly BT dongle doesn't require any special drivers under Android/Linux.
Next step is loading some non-Carly software onto the laptop and seeing if I can establish a data-link. So as long as other SW relies on a COM/serial port to communicate to the ECU(s) it's entirely possible that it will work. Famous last words They probably added something in the SW to coalesce buffers to establish a reliable BT connection. Then again, if the connection is managed at the lowest "PHY"-like level, it might still work. |

Hey does anyone know if you can use the rear LCI taillight led strips as DRLs? And know the coding i need to find in carly?
I tried coding rear DRL on carly, but it just turned on these tiny little bulbs in the tails.

Does anyone know if they updated the Carly software to only work with their wifi adapter? I've tried connecting using my old ELM wifi dongle and it won't connect to the app. Seems they might have upgraded the app?..?

Just ordered the iOS Gen 2 Carly adapter off amazon. Will post back on my success or failure to code a 2010 128i with the following:
1) Windows roll up by holding down lock button on key fob 2) Unlocks doors after engine off 3) Side markers turn on with headlights 4) Fog lights stay on with high beams or flash to pass |

Tried to code my friends 2015 M3 other day, got message the app only works for F series with their V2 adapter. NOT HAPPY. This is BS, other apps work with ANY adapter. When all the G Series are out they will say sorry gotta buy V3 now.
