Here's my before after pics.
This is when I got the car back in June 2013 on stock suspension, stock alignment, and stock stagerred 215/40R18 + 245/35R18 RunFlat RE-050 tires. This is the car now with -3.2* camber in the front and -1.8* in the rear. It has M3 front control arms, camber plates, swift spec-r springs, bilstein b8 dampers, and front+rear 255/35R18 Dunlop ZII tires (apologies for crappy cellular phone pics and dirty car): Front tire and fender: Rear tire and fender:

Going over moderate potholes will send a shockwave through the suspension and make me cringe over the possibility of bending a wheel or suspension arm, or mushrooming of my strut towers.

128i M-Sport Suspension w/B12
If any of you are still out there, I need some advice.
I have a 128i with M-Sport Suspension 90k miles. For street fun and autocross. I would like to upgrade the stock dampers (and springs if possible?) The dampers are due to be replaced anyhow I'm sure. Springs, I'm not so sure about? If I keep the stock M-Sport springs, which Bilsteins would match the springs? As much as I would like to go with the B12 Pro Kit I can't afford to lower the front any more than it is now. (Fronts were rubbing where the fender/bumper connect going over speed bumps and in to driveways. It has self clearanced) However, if the front springs are sagging and the B12 springs would actually keep the front where it is, I'd be a happy man. I should add that when auto crossing, the front suspension bottoms out in tight corners. I figure new dampers would help, springs and dampers would be much better. I'm running: Front 17x8 40mm offset 225/45 Rear 17x9 45mm offset 245\40 Last edited by PCNewman; 08-02-2020 at 06:30 AM.. Reason: add photo |

Yikes - I think the suspension is quite tired which is causing some of your problems. There is a lot of back and forth on what dampers best match M-Sport. People have had success with either the B6 or B8. B8 for anything lower than m-sport for sure, b6 for non-sport and maybe even M-Sport.
Spring sag could be a thing, also a lower/stiffer spring is going to help prevent things bottoming out. If you want to maintain close to stock ride height and don't want something super stiff see if you can find BMW performance springs, pair them with B8 dampers and call it a day....If you add Dinan camber plates up front you will gain 5mm of clearance/height, and improve front end grip due to the camber, as well as gain more clearance also due to camber. |

Thanks for the advise. That will give me some different options to look in to for sure. I was pretty sold on the Bilstein B12 pro kit but was worried about tire rub up front. The Dinan camber plates may be the ticket for that. I found BMW Performance springs for E82 but the are $400 set. Probably not too bad for what you're getting. But with B8's the set up will be over $1k. I can do the B12 for around $700. But if...but if....hmmm. |

Depending on how your car is optioned (ie weight) the B12 kit might not be that low.

Also, keep in mind that you'll likely need to refresh stuff like shock mounts and other suspension hardware. Turner has a kit that was going for ~$235 when I ordered last week. |

Those pics in are kind of deceiving. First pic was in a hard corner accelerating and bottoming the left front spring out. Second pic was from an elevated view point. Here it is with the stock 17's: Last edited by PCNewman; 08-02-2020 at 04:51 PM.. |

Papa Popov, Does your car have M-Sport suspension from the factory? Would you measure the distance from center of wheel and bottom of fender, before and after? |

Yes it does. I'll grab some measurements for ya when the car is on level ground. Likely won't be until I go to install the new stuff in a couple weeks though.

Just to add to this thread. This is my car on Eibach Pro-kit and Bilstein B8s (basically the B12 kit bought separately). This is fully settled in with around 40K-50K miles on it and Apex EC-7 1 series fitment wheels (265/35-18 Rear, 235/40-18 Front).
B12 Front B12 Rear STOCK non-sport with about 30K miles (on Style 197s) B12 immediately after install (about 50 miles on them with 197s)

Just installed my B12 kit 8/7/2022 with 103k on car. Added DINAN plates. stock Sport suspension replaced.
Very nice upgrade and very useable as a daily. Nice not crashing the bump stops!!!

I've done 50,000km on my B12 prokit and they have been a great upgrade from stock and have absolutely no complaints about the performance but...
They have dropped a bit from new Had to add a stiffer front swaybar to help the springs in fast corners initially they are soft There's no adjustability so if you add -camber +caster it will drop car down further on the wheel (my wheel is approximately a fingerwidth under the arch Mine can scrape over driveway transitions etc Does anyone know if replacing the eibach springs with swift springs help this issue - ie would it give me 10mm height? I thought about dinan camber plates but that still wouldn't be enough.. Might have to bite the bullet and get height adjustable coilovers.. |
